Just watched these two EPS for the first time.
I absolutely loved the scene where Mal explained why he was returning the money to tatoo face, the tatooed buy threatens him then Mal kicks him into the engine intake then explains his situation again. This is great stuff!!! The situation between Simon (Doc?) and Jayne is going to be great I bet in EP's to come on the rest of the DVD set I bought.
Bushwacked was great as well, established a really good history for the Reavers, to me as a newbie it was very helpful to have that EP.

Glad to have a new Firefly fan on board. The Train Job scene with "putting his man through our engine" is frequently cited as the first thing that hooked us on Firefly. It is priceless. Definitely the reason *I* started paying attention.

...and then in Bushwhacked, the scene with River and Simon outside the ship. Gazing into the black and responding in completely different and completely believable ways. And to think these are considered two of the weaker episodes of the series.

My son has been out prostylizing Firefly to his friends. Borrowed my boxed set, goes to their house and they all watch a few episodes.
So far he has not gotten past Bushwacked. This is due more to time than anything else. (That's four hours in one shot) But the universal opinion of his friends is "This is great! Why did Fox cancel it. I gotta get this set for myself.(my dad, my friend, etc)"
His mom and I just said, "Damn, you haven't even gotten to the really GOOD ones yet. Boy are they gonna really love this."
