I heard somewhere (reliably aint I ) That they changed the look for Vera in Serenity, so according to that hes got it there somewhere, we just dont know wich gun it is.

Well...for overall layout, Vera could be the modified HK MP10 that Jayne carries on Haven the second time; for firepower, the GE minigun sized weapon Jayne uses till he gets shot be Reavers at the standoff at Mr. Universe's could be a suitable replacment.

And I stand corrected. Jayne doesn't use Vera during the BDH siege of Niska's skyplex (probably so he didn't blow through a pressure hull or something). Though I am pretty sure the weapon Jayne fires at the end of Our Mrs. Reynolds through the helmet of a spacesuit is supposedly Vera, but yeah...you never see the actual rifle fire during the series. Kinda surprised they never had Jayne use Vera during the attack on the Heart of Gold.

One pont to note is that for some eps Jayne could of been out of ammo for Vera. Theres a comment in The Message about not being able to get ammo for one weapon or another. Chances are that for a high tech piece of kit like Vera, Jayne wouldn't always have ammo.

As for the modified MP5 Jayne is carrying around in Serenity, I suspect it was a conscious decision to give Jayne a cooler looking rifle to shoot with.

Ammo would be in short supplies. The Alliance would limited the sales of ammo , not wanting another war with the out laying planets. That would mean that smuggling ammo is big business.
I have also noticed alot of various firearms on the show, nothing seemed standard. But a rebel army would use what it could buy, steal from local Fed troops or what troops brought with them.

Don't we all? As for me, my favorite pistol is, hands down, the Ruger P-89. It is just such an easy gun! Decent accuracy, reliable design, and easy maintenance. What more could I ask for?

As for Rifles, it's a close tie between my 1953 Red Army issue SKS (modified to take bananna clips instead of strippers) and my AR-180. I like the power of the SKS a lot, but the AR-180 definitely outclasses it in terms of accuracy. Both are easily cleaned and maintained. The SKS is more reliable than the AR-180, but is heavier. Plus, the 180 has a pre-ban folding stock. Hmm... I still can't decide...

First, to correct some misconceptions about the AR/M16 series. It IS NOT anywhere NEAR as unreliable as lore says it is. I have owned three ARs over the years. Some all-factory, some mixmaster parts. Of them all.. the ONLY failures I EVER experienced were due to a single bad magazine (FN manufacture) that had the locking hole for the mag catch punched out in the wrong place, so as to hold the mag too low for the bolt to strip rounds. Not being military, my cleaning can best be described as erratic... I certainly wasn't babying 'em.

The M16 series has its problems (that some gosh-awful burst mechanism with its three different trigger pulls, the way some loose ones can feel floppy or give a facefull of gas around the charging handle) .. but they're annoyances. Not critical function design errors.

It's not for nothing that the AR/M16 platform is still used all around the world in all climates almost a half century after its adoption. No, it ain't perfect. But it's a pretty decent rifle nonetheless.

So far as the effectiveness of 5.56.. so long as it's going over 2500 feet per second, it will typically fragment on impact and do all kinds of (fatal) nastiness to the recipient. There's also the question of projectile design.. the armor piercing stuff doesn't fragment and has been reported to be less effective on people. Inside of 100 yards, standard 5.56/.223 has even been reported to have superior terminal effects that 7.62 (.308) due to fragmentation.

Anyhow.. what it all comes down to is..don't use short barrels and fire at targets far away, and don't use AP unless you're firing at something armored, and it should do you fine.

ANYHOW.. on to the Firefly stuff..
Yes, Jayne's pistol in Serenity is some variant of 1911. It has what looks like some kind of reflex sight built into the slide though, and I don't know of any real world maker that does that.. so I'm assuming its custom built for the movie, possibly even out of rubber or suchlike.

I've heard Vera is now in private hands in the UK, and has been deactivated. I don't know if this was done prior to its use on Firefly though.

Oh yeah... one more thing on the M16 while its on my mind.. simple logic time.

I don't care how you feel about our going into Iraq.. one way or t'other, don't matter here. The point is, we have CongressCritters raising a stink 'cause Humvees weren't APCs, 'cause the entire force wasn't wearing armor that wasn't even on the drawing board the last time we went to war.. all kinds of stuff.

If the M16 was really as bad as legend has it, TRUST ME.. we'd have CongressCritters getting all teary eyed holding the darn thing in front of Walter Reed hospital.

As it is.. the US Army was even looking at replacing the M16 with the XM8 a while back (basically an HK G36 wrapped up in a new space-gun lookin' plastic shell).. they dropped the project. No substantial benefit from it.

It works.
