Is anyone ever banned from this site?

I'm just wondering because I've been on a thread that was hijacked by a truly horrible person. I'm not used to this kind of thing happening on this site, I'm used to fellow browncoats actually caring about what other people think and being intelligent even when they're on opposing sides of an issue. But this guy, by the name Chrismoorhead, has been nothing but terrible and doesn't care who he's offending or how much. I was hoping that this didn't happen much because people like that just weren't allowed. I know we have troll country (though it seems a shame to send otherwise intelligent threads there sometimes) but do users ever actually get banned? If not, can we make an exception?

Things like this happen from time to time, not often, but enough. You just need to remember who you want to avoid.

The thing about banning people is that you can't keep them from making a new screenname and joining again, so there's no real point to it. We just have to ignore the people we don't agree with. I can also say that Chrismoorhead's other responses I have seen in the past weren't anything as bad as what went on today. I don't usually agree with him, but I have never seen his posts be that offensive.

I definitely know how you're feeling since his first post in that thread was in direct response to mine. I wasn't around so I sure appreciate you and the other intelligent male and female responses in my absence.

As soon as I got back on I started looking for an "ignore" option, which is common on many newsgroups for these kind of things. Maybe when Haken gets that house built we can petition him for that added option to this shiny board.

Regardless, I swear I will not let the crazy person drive me from such an otherwise cool place!

Maybe, if we just keep posting like this he will get the hint and do the right thing. Of course, after what he did in the other thread, I don't know if he knows what the right thing is. It is unfortunate that some of us guys get into trouble because of the comments that one person makes.

If there was a way to kick him off, I would be all for it. I would even do the throwing out of the trash myself.

people have been banned...
we had a really destructive troll posting porno/gross pictures all over this site....

his IP address was identified (his High School I think it was!)
and he was not only banned, he was reported to his school administration (if I remember all this correctly, could be I have a couple of different trolls confused in my mind)...

at any rate, it helps to start a thread like this to make the board mods aware of the problem...

and try not to take it personally. *hug*

there is so much love, humor and goodness here that it far outweighs the negative IMHO...

I'm sorry you had to experience a Troll firsthand, but something that works quite well with them is to just ignore them.

It's simple psychology: if the troll isn't reinforced (rewarded) for their behavior, they will eventually stop doing the behavior. What will happen when they first get ignored is they will end up being MORE annoying, upping the ante so to speak, because they're not getting the reaction they want. But if people consistently keep ignoring the troll, they'll eventually leave to find someplace else where the people will have a reaction to their idiocy instead of no reaction.

I believe I know which thread you were talking about and Tristan was smart when he said "Ignore, and move to this new thread." If you keep ignoring, he'll go away.

Now there's a good chance that this guy'll be a jerk on this thread too, or even personally attack you or me because of this thread, but just ignore. He's not worth getting upset over. Personally, I just laugh a little on the inside because I find it sadly amusing that people like that are so desperate for attention that they'll go to any means to get it. Sad little idiot in his sad little world.
