Why Brown?

What's wrong with pink?

Pink just isn't earthy enough. And no soldier would wear such a sissy color on the battlefield. And it would hurt our eyes for all manner of reasons; not only is it bright and kind of eye-searing in many of it's forms, it would just hurt to see Mal in a long pink coat with matching shirt, pants and suspenders in various shades.
But that's being too logical. Maybe it's just because the creator of the show wasn't a 12-year-old girl? (Not meaning to imply that the poster is a 12-year-old girl and meaning no disrespect to them in general as I was one myself once, but come on now! Pink?)

I figured because it was like Confederate Grey - easy to make at home and cheap. Rim worlds would have no problem mass producing brown cloth or dying/staining other cloth brown. A color like purple is the heckuva lot trickier (that's one of the reasons the Romans reserved it for royalty) and much more expensive.

I think it's just that "Pinkcoats" doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.

You have to start with white to dye a coat pink.

Dying a coat brown is about the cheapest uniform that one can produce.
