I just watched Objects in Space again for the god knows how manyth time. Something I've always wondered...Was River going to go with Jubal before Simon got shot? The tone in her voice and the look on her face make me feel like she was...

What do you think??

Nope, it was all part of her plan. although some of the things she says are true she never intended to go with him

nope, she was never planning on leaving, her plan was to get Jubal out of the ship so that Mal could get him by surprise. Her plan just ran into a hitch when Simon thought she was giving herself up. I think she was making it convincing so that Jubal would believe her.

I think this scene really shows what part of the appeal of the show is. You really don't know whether River was actually planning on going with Early, despite her plan, which may have been simply to keep the rest of the crew safe. She talk about how no one is really safe with her and how she has caused so many problems. I don't think you can definitvely say whether she was planning on going before Simon got shot. Just my take.

I'm just pretty sure she was never planning on leaving because she wouldn't have had the captain out there waiting if she was.

I agree with Viterdraken. If she was really planning on going off with Jubal, would she have had Mal hiding and ready for him?

Think everything River said was true, though. Which just makes that scene all the more poignant :(

Here's a half-formed thought, though: River was obviously wondering about her place on board Serenity in this episode. She knows the whole crew will be able to hear her monologue. She likely means what she says. Maybe she should just go away, and solve everyone's problems. But it's not Jubal's right to make that decision, but the crew's.

(Side note: was looking at my Firefly Soundtrack CD today, and noticed for the first time that the picture in the place where the CD goes: it's gotta be a pic from that scene where Mal pushes Early off Serenity, only neither one is wearing a helmet :)

I hadn't considered her sending Mal out to get Jubal. I guess the truth of her statements made her cry...

I agree, also point of interest: Early's highly intuitive/near psychic abilities might have detected a lie and so River had to our-psyche Early to make it believable
