So, I never watched a Joss Whedon show/movie until Firefly, and just recently someone borrowed me the BtVS season one DVDs.
I never watched Buffy before, probably for that awful title (Joss never seems to get them quite right!) but I was really amazed about what a good show it is turning out to be.
I've heard of so many people who have done just the opposite: have seen Buffy and Angel and Joss's other things THEN they got into Firefly.
Got me to thinking about how many people out there knew Buffy and co., then Firefly and how many people knew Firefly then the rest of the Jossverse?

Buffy was and is arguably one of the best written shows on TV - as is Firefly. I recently read how Buffy was a flop and had few viewers - yeah in the USA! Those people fail to count all the other shiny countries.
I reccommend you get Angel too - its all Shiny Shiny Joss work!
One summer.
One mission.
One army of Browncoats.
And a bunch of Rings that make Shiny people do silly things!
Starting June 23rd, we aim to misbehave!
Nathan doesn't know it yet, but I am his one true love! Is that weird?
(he will believe, he will believe)

I was a Buffy first, then Angel, then Firefly. I love all three shows, but its our BDH that seem to have considerably more...depth to them I guess you'd say. At least, they do to me.
And actually for me, I watched Buffy the first time because of the title. I figured anything with a title that giggle-worthy, was worth an hour of my time to check out.

I watched Buffy from the first episode when it first aired over here in the UK. I was eight. It probably scarred me for life, but I don't care.
I'm a fairly new Browncoat, despite having seen the series about two and a half years ago. I became hooked, but wasn't able to find it on DVD, so I gradually forgot about it. I will be forever grateful to my strangely Firefly obsessed best friend for re-introducing me to the fandom last autumn - just in time for the BDM!!!

Yeah, Buffy hooked me on the BBC when it first aired - November 1998 (!).
I picked up Firefly from the first day it aired in the USA, downloading the episodes.

I was a Buffyfan before putting on my 'coat.
I saw someone do a breakdown of the title once, illustrating how perfectly appropriate it was:
Buffy - Sounds faintly silly, suggecting the comedy and Valley Girl sensibility.
Vampire - Evokes gothic horror and sexuality, and with demonic undertones.
Slayer - Suggesting the violence, but also evoking the idea of a mythical hero (they're called "Dragon Slayers," not "Dragon Hunters").
The - Joss' inability to count.

I started watching Buffy first, about seven(?) years ago but only saw a few episodes. I got back into it a few years later when they started showing reruns on a channel that I actually got. I then got hooked on Angel. I saw Serenity this past January and within days was hooked on Firefly, and it remains my absolute favorite Joss creation

yep, I was a buffy addict long before I'd heard of firefly, I watched all of buffy and angel first, then I discovered firefly.

As far as I recall, Joss made the title deliberately bad and 80s. His intention was that if you weren't cool enough to get over the title you weren't cool enough to watch his show.
"He says he gave the show a ridiculous name because if people couldn't get past it, he didn't want them watching. If viewers could accept the ironic name and the incongruous plot (about a California girl hunting vampires), Whedon figured, they must have the ironic sensibilities and openness needed to get what he was doing."
