Wash's lines are usually funny. And about the hair...

ZOE: "River, honey? He's putting the hair away now."
RIVER: "Doesn't matter. It'll still be there...waiting."

Too many to chose, hair one from someone else's post. (Don't remember, sorry)

Hey Teela,

Maybe you could clear up a disagreement I have with my Dad about Hitchhikers. You know how the answer to life the universe and everthing turned out to be 42.. well they then went on to find out the question and I seem to recall the question being 6x7, My old man reckons the question was 7x8.. Is either of us right?

I ain't Teela, nor do I play one on TV.
The question is what is 6 times 9. It only works in base 13 though.

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"

Calhoun-
You are both wrong. It is 6x9. The original quote is...(from my handy-dandy-all-inl-one set, which sooner or later I will find the quote)

Basically, Ford and Arthur have decided that swince Arthur grew up on Earth, the second super-computer, that his sub-concious has The Answer. They take Arthur's scrabble he made, put all the pieces (Except Z. They lost that) in Ford's towl. So, here we go...

"W," said Ford, "H, A, T...What!"

He blinked.

"I think it's working!" he said.

Arthur pushed three mor at him.

"D, O, Y...Doy. Oh, prehaps it isn't working," said Ford.

"O, U, G...Doyoug...It's not making sense, I'm afraid"

Arthur pulled two more from the bag.

"E, T, doyouget...Do you get!" shouted Ford. "It is working! This is amazing, it is really working!"

"More here." Arthur was throwing them out feverishly as fast as he could.

"I, F," said Ford, "Y, O, U.....M, U, L, T, I, P, L, Y...What do you get if you multiply...S, I, X,...six...B, Y...by, six,by...what do you get if you multiply six by...N, I, N, E...six by nine..." He paused. "Come on, where's the next one?"

"Er, that's the lot," said Arthur, "that's all there were."

He sat back, nonplussed.

He rooted around again in the knotted up towl but there were no more letters.

"You mean that's it?" said Ford.

"That's it"

"Six by nine. Forty-two."

"That's it. That's all there is."

Hope that clears things up. If you really want to check, it's chapter 33 in The Resturant at the End of the Universe.

Also, a note: 6 by 9 is 54 in base ten, but, acording to my dad who loves math, in base 13, 6 by 9 IS forty-two.

Keep flyin'!

A - I love your modification, if you send it to Wilson I think he would like it too.

"Slightly OT, but in response to LindyCat's closing statement: Not only do I agree wholeheartedly, but I also noticed that the War Against Some Terrorists, if slightly modified to the War Against Some Terrorist Elements, would be aptly named the WASTE." ~A~

If you go to rawilson dot com you will find lots more good stuff along the lines of this quote.

The whole quote in my sig is this...

WAR AGAINST SOME TERRORISTS

7 Ways of Looking at a Monkey-House
September 29, 2001 e.v.

Just as the War Against Drugs would make some kind of sense if they honestly called it a War Against Some Drugs, I regard Dubya's current Kampf as a War Against Some Terrorists. I may remain wed to that horrid heresy until he bombs CIA headquarters in Langtry.

-------------------------------------------------

I turned on CNN a few days ago and a White House robot announced that the rebels in Chechnya "were" no longer freedom fighters but "are" now terrorists with "clear" links to Osama bin Laden.

CNN provided no details about whether the transformation occured in a sudden miraculous flash like the transubstantiation of the host in a Catholic mass, or happened slowly and gradually like Darwinian evolution.

In a related bulletin, Russia pledged its support in the War Against Some Terrorists, and will presumably start with those bastards in Chechnya.

------------------------------------------------

DO NOT ADJUST YOUR MIND:
IT IS REALITY THAT IS MALFUNCTIONING

-----------------------------------------------

The plight of Bill Maher reminds me of something Ezra Pound wrote about London in 1919: "A single intelligent remark can destroy a man's entire career."

-------------------------------------------------

A friend in Israel just sent me an email quoting George Bush saying we should all go to Disneyland. It didn't surprise me. I kind of suspect George lives in Disneyland all the time, with Mickey and Goofy and Osama bin Laden and all the "faith-based organizations" in the world.

------------------------------------------------

As Voltaire said, "The only way to comprehend what mathematicians mean by Infinity is to contemplate the extent of human stupidity."

------------------------------------------------

Pfui.

I don't know much where math is concerned, so y'all should tell me what this base 13 business is about.
I always just made up my own question to the answer 42, by the way.... it was "how many roads must a man walk down?"

The mice made that up! Maniac, come on. I pretty sure you're smarter than that. It's plagerism!

Also-base thirteen is um...well base ten with three extra fingers. Does that help?
