Yeh I'll agree it was a turning point. The fact Jayne asks Mal to not to tell the others what he did shows he already cared about the rest of the crew and what they thought of him. Jayne was about to die and his last words and thoughts where of the rest of the crew. This also stopped Mal from pressing the button to open the airlock door. It makes you wonder what would have happened if Jayne would have told Mal to go to Hell.
