Wow im posting too much lately :) We all know Jayne is a mercenery. However why did he sell out simon and river in Ariel? I think its another Joss Whedon thing. 'Characters doing the unexpected'.However Jayne has always been an edgey character. SO he can turn on our key characters at any time. me for one I didn' want Jayne to turn. I always want Jayne on my side. What does Jayne mean to you?

I don't think it was unexpected at all. Jayne hinted at getting a reward for Simon and River right from episode one. He's money obsessed (asking Mal if they got the money as Book lay dying in 'Safe'). He said it himself: the money was too good, and he got stupid.

Interestingly, in 'The Message' when Jayne is reading his letter, his mother thanks him for forwarding credits. He does share... we're just not sure how much. I like to think Jayne is really an anti-hero who really doesn't want to be at all. He's smart in some situations, but very prone to foolishness in others. Storywise, he's an excellent element for conflict, tension, and humour :D

yep 'good bible' LOL. I agree Jayne is a selfish man however at the end of the day would he stand by Mal and his flock without gain. He would do it out of faith ?

My theory runs both shallow and deep on this. It's weird.
First off, he did get "A little stabbed" at the beginning, so he was pissed. That's the shallow reason.
The deeper, weird reason has to do with the Blue Sun shirt. I don't know if I imagine it or not, but he seems to be meaner to Simon in episodes where he wears that shirt. Bushwhacked comes to mind, for one, and I think the pilot, too. Nothing all that major, just seems his sadism is upped with that shirt on.
So in Ariel, not only does he get slashed, but so does the shirt. I think it was a really subtle way of saying "Blue Sun is bad, and there is a conspiracy, and they will find a way of controlling anyone they can"
Not that the shirt was controlling him, per se, I think it was a plot device. But if they'll (alledgedly) put mind control drugs in their food products... Well, I don't see how it would work with a shirt, so nevermind. I think it was a plot thing, with the shirt and Blue Sun. Bad things happened with that logo. It was a cool forshadowing device.
Maybe I'm totally addlepated. Just a theory.

Jayne has to be one of the good guys. After all, truly evil people do not wear orange knitted hats made by their Ma. Or play with rainsticks. Or name their guns. Well, maybe the gun thing.

This episode is rather a turning point for Jayne.
Up until this point, he has had no problems about selling out any of the others for money but the fact that Mal lets him live at the end makes him look hard at what his loyalties are.

Although I'm asuming his major expenses are on expensive guns and ammo I like the idea that Jayne sends the majority of his money to his family. Ariel wasn't the first time Jayne tried to get his hands on one large bundle of cash (see Jaynestown backstory). Seems a bit desperate, doesn't it? It would be a kind way of explaining his money-crazy ways.

PHOENIXROSE - Your post just revealed something to me I hadn't thought of before, although I don't think it was your intent.

To me, you just answered the question why did River "stab" Jayne. She didn't, she was stabbing Blue Sun.

Maybe everybody allready knew this but I didn't and it is a great little revelation. Just one of the infinite reasons I can't help but keep watching the series.

Yeah, River hates Blue Sun. There are a few threads to that effect somewhere abouts. There's also an incident with some Blue Sun food. And who else, really, could the "hands of blue" work for? A few commentaries and such talk about the big government corporation that was Blue Sun. Maybe they had something to do with the PAX, maybe they had something to do with the "program" she was abducted into, maybe both. Wish we knew.

River fliping out and ripping off the labels of the cans in shindig while simon , book and Jayne are playing cards. Prime example of RIver hating Blue Sun. Jayne kills it with 'Are we playing cards here or are we gonna screw around'.LOL
