Uh...thought Jayne got Vera cooking in the end of "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when he fires Vera to disable the capture net Saffron had sent them hurtling towards.
Plus I think Jayne had Vera going in at least one other episode...maybe "War Stories," during the storming of the Skyplex.

Vera was original made for another movie.. and Eddie Murphy one I think. It was supposed to be a novel OICW, which was all the rage at the time (which didn't work too well, and basically became an excuse to try to sell the military a G36 wrapped up in a supersoaker body. Also didn't work. But that's another story)
ANYHOW.. Vera is based on a Saiga sporting semi-auto shotgun.. basically a shotgun designed around a Kalishnikov action (you can see the body of it buried in there in that picture. ) Oh, and semi-auto only of course. The original builder made a new grip and milled out a bunch of decor pieces for it. And made it folding. The barrel is on that picture, it's just folded up over the action.
When the folks at Firefly got a hold of it, they bolted a bunch of other goodies to it, and in so doing made it so it wouldn't fold anymore.
Neat lookin' toy, but um.. not as interesting as The Cod.

Once upon a time, I worked for a friend in his Tactical-Guns-R-Us workshop. He made stuff for local police departments, I think some local National Guard units, and of course just plain folk. While there I got to take apart, clean, and play with quite a few modern small arms.. let's see.. an HK MP5, an HK G36, Colt M4 (the select fire version), some Remington based sniper rifles...um... all kinds of pistols, suppressed and not ... I'm sure there were others but I can't think of 'em right now.
Truth be told, the ol timey stuff is prettier, but it's nice to know how the modern stuff works I guess.

Hrmm.. that depends I guess.
Pistols.. the modern versions of the 1911 have superb ergonomics and are a nice balance of power and handling. Nothing points or handles like a Single Action Army (that's Colt Peacemaker) though. I'd say that'd be my favorite, provided it was reworked with modern springs and cylinder stop for durability.
As to all the modern plastic pistols.. enh. They work, but I have yet to handle one I really like.
Rifles.. my personal soft spot is for the Winchester model 70 classic, with pretty wood. Go back to old west days, and the Sharps carbine is a really pretty piece of work.
If you're talking modern fightin' type rifles, I reckon M16-based carbines are mighty nice. They work as well as any other 5.56 out there (problems 40 years ago notwithstanding), and have truly superb ergonomics, especially with aftermarket forward vertical grips and extended charging handles.
I don't really get into shotguns, so I couldn't really say there.
How's that for indecision? I just get excitable as to choice is all. :)

I just had to start a guns conversation didn't I?
Revolvers are always nice but aren't as practical anymore, but my fav is the Colt Anaconda, it's a bit new compared to other revolvers, but it gets the job done, as for newer Semi auto handguns its a tie for me between the .50 AE Desert Eagle and the FN Fourty-Nine with .40 S&W ammo.
For me in assault rifles the new M8 comes to mind, with the exception of the Polymer body its a great AR. Or Italies FAMAS (one of the Browncoats assault rifles for those who didn't know)It's an assault rifle but has the RPM of most SMG's. The original M16 wasn't that good but the newer model A2's and A3's are doing pretty good.
I'm also partial to some of the guns that never made it like the Jackhammer Shotgun and the M28 OICW.

Ok so its russian and every drug dealer in the world has 40 of em but that just shows how popular they are!
sure im as much a fan of an m16 with m203 grenade launcher attachment as the next guy but when you hear that AK pop a few shells i go weak at the knees 
in a semi-muscular manish way

Look real close. I'm pretty certian that we never actually see Vera discharge in War Stories. That's why Jayne is running around with what I beleive is a Colt 1911. I'd be more precise but my DVD's are spread amongst my converts right now. 8 and rising!
I've heard that the Vera prop can fire. It may well have in its Eddie Murphy incarnation, but given all the action in War Stories, that would have been a good time to have Vera spitting flames. This suggests to me that the prop is non-firing. If somebody stands up and says, "I saw them fire the gun on the set of Firefly." I'll shutup.
Random thought. Vera's folded configuration actually looks a lot like the OCIW-esque weapons used in Universal Soldier: the Return.
