Just by fluke stumbled onto the Dixie Chicks website and listened to their new single :

Not Ready To Make Nice

http://www.dixiechicks.com/default2006.asp

WOW

Really like the song, and I don't mind saying the thinking behind it too....

If this isn't Browncoat music, don't know what else would come even close.

Talented ? Yep, but they've lost me as a fan. Couldn't care less what they title their album. ' Not Ready to Make Money ' for all I care.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Talented? No, I think cheesy. They kind of seem like a bunch of shock-artists. The only song they ever did that I ever thought had any degree talent was Landslide, which was a Fleetwood song, not theirs; they didn’t even perform it as well as Fleetwood Mac. I don’t guess they are any worse then most other pop-star groups, most of which are pretty cheesy. In twenty years, I doubt they’ll be particularly remembered, certainly not for their music.

Nothing is more unpredictable than the mob, nothing more obscure than public opinion, nothing more deceptive than the whole political system.

It's a pretty good song. I wish they'd presented this attitude when all the fuss was brewing. I was disappointed when they went into damage control mode. Fans who will piss themselves at the thought of political strife aren't worth having. But I guess money is. Still, I'd probably have counted myself as a fan if they'd just told all the paper-patriots to fuck off.

"I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over."

Translation: The Dixie Chicks made some controversial political statements. At least one parent encouraged her daughter to write nasty mail to the Dixie Chicks. In that mail, the Dixie Chicks were urged to stay out of politics or they'd face dire consequences. They have responded with this song.

In short: I have a right to speak my mind without having my life threatened.

I wonder just how much of that was the label trying to spin things.

I suppose by not telling the " paper patriots " ( I like the term ) to fuck off, they were respecting that there are other opinions, seems to me they took the high road there, and those who threw the ape shit patriot hissy fits showed themselves for what they are really about.

" I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should "

Despite knowing what they are actually singing about, I still get this picture of Mal and Zoe when I hear some of these lyrics.....

Maybe someone will do a nice Fanvid in the Bluesun
room

" Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing "

I wonder if those lines were an intentional reply to Laura Ingrahams book....

I disagree w/ what they say, even if I think they sound fine when the sing. They can tell anyone they want to fuck off, and we'll just not buy their music. It's that simple.

Ahh... I bet you're right.

It's interesting to me, because singers, actors and the like spouting off about politics has always seemed kind of silly to me. But not as silly as people taking them seriously when they do. They're just folks like the rest of us, with their own opinions - right or wrong.

I guess the thing is, I don't look to artists for political advice, so when their opinions differ from mine its a non-issue. But all that assumes a context of freedom of speech, which seems make a lot of people uncomfortable these days.

As an afterthought, it's somewhat surprising that Joss Whedon hasn't received more backlash for the relatively political message of "Serenity".

You can buy or not buy whatever you want, but if they want to speak out against something they feel is wrong...

Do you think they should not have that right ?

Do you think threats, ranting, and burning of CD's over a difference of opinion is what your country is all about ?

Just who are you including into your " we won't buy " ?
