I am now the ecstatic owner of the actual medal worn by Adam Baldwin in SERENITY! Purchased from Prop Store of London.

This is my own scan of it (enlarged to show detail).

I've been making replicas of the jewelry from FIREFLY since October - Kaylee's, Inara's and Saffron's. When I saw the Big Damn Movie, I noticed that Jayne also wore a necklace in a few scenes. I could tell from the shape that it was probably a Catholic saint's medal of some kind. But, which saint? Or was it even a saint at all? In the interest of making replicas of ALL of the SERENITY jewelry, I wanted to know.

But, also, Jayne is my favorite FIREFLY character! The thought of having the actual necklace Adam Baldwin wore just blew my mind. I didn't expect Prop Store of London to get it, but I emailed them my request. WOW, did I luck out! Wishes were horses, and I was definitely eating steak. The necklace was on display at Universal Studios theme park, but when the display was over, it would be mine. I had to wait until April 2006, but it's finally here!

What now? Well, I'd like to offer replicas of Jayne's medal, too. Unlike the others, though, I can say with 100% confidence that I know exactly what it looks like! And I have every right to copy it, since I own it!!

I have found a source for Saint Christopher medals in the exact same style, but I cannot find any chain that looks the same or even close. It is very cool looking chain, but apparently pretty unusual. If anyone knows where I can get it, let me know! Thanks! So, at this point, I don't know when I'll have replicas for sale, but if you'd like to put in a request, let me know.

Oh my God, man. I used to have the EXACT same chain, with some kinda tribal design thing hangin' off of it. I don't remember where I got it, and I lost the necklace a few years ago. All I can tell you is that I purchased the chain in a little touristy store in Scotland. Sorry I couldn't help...

Just out of curiosity, how much did that baby set you back? I think of screen-used props as being mighty pricey, but your story doesn't make it sound like a huge purchase.

It does help to know that the chain is out there, somewhere!

Sure, props like that are several hundred dollars. Sales of my FIREFLY jewelry and FIREFLY t-shirt designs on cafepress are helping me afford it.

Congratulations Flame, so nice to see the props of the movie and show are going to the fans, and not people buying them to sell at a rediculously huge profit.

As for the chain, there must be stores on-line that might help you. Again, congrats fellow Browncoat. Hope you enjoy it for years to come.

Have you asked Jetflair ( www.serenityverse.com)? She seems to have a nice little corner of the Verse - might have a line or two she could throw your way. Just an idea. That St. Christopher medal might look pretty cunning with one of these shirts also.

... uh... heh... have you seen the prices at the London movie prop store?? I think they surpassed the "ridiculously huge profit" and went straight to "insanely ludicrous profit."

Flame - I'm so jealous! I've been holding off on the Kaylee outfits in hopes that they'd post that necklace, but I guess I missed it. Keep it safe... and if you ever wanna sell it, I'm your huckleberry.

UPDATE: Thanks to a fantastic Browncoat who emailed me - thanks Cat! - I've located a source for chain that is the same style/shape as Jayne's! It's a Bico chain, from Australia.

However, it doesn't come in the right length. Jayne's is 24 inches long, but I can only get 20 inches long (or less) from Bico. Plus, the Bico chain I found is not sterling silver, and Jayne's chain is (stamped 925 on both ends, anyway).

Also, with the medal itself, I've managed to find St. Christopher medals in pewter (Jayne's is pewter) which look like the same design - same words around edge, same number of stars, same style St. Christopher image - but they have little areas that are slightly beveled and polished to catch the light - which Jayne's doesn't have these.

I know that some people want absolutely exact prop copies, and for those people I will continue the search. Unfortunately, I am not a silversmith or pewtersmith, so I can't make my own chain or medal. I'm also on the lookout for someone affordable who might be able to make medals from a mold of the original. Depends on how the mold is made... I kind of don't want to do anything that might affect the front of the medal because it's got ... well, SERENITY dust, I guess... patina and dust and such in the stars, etc. Heck, Adam Baldwin's sweat for all I know. Don't want to mess that up.

But, for anyone interested in a *pretty close* replica of JAYNE'S SERENITY NECKLACE (with the 20-inch chain and the medal, as I described above), I can now do that. The cost will be $42 (the chain is pretty expensive, folks, sorry!) plus shipping/handling. Use the coupon code BROWNCOAT and get first class s/h for $1.
