I have wondered this myself. However, I don't think that she got anything from any of the other women on the ship. The styles of what they wear don't match up with what she wears. The outfits don't look like something simon would have brought for her either. It is a mystery to me.

They weren't cows inside. They were waiting to be, but they forgot. Now they see sky, and they remember what they are.

I'd imagine in the early days on the ship
Simon had picked out at least *some* of her clothes
-the gorram doll dress perhaps his sub-conscious
effort at keeping her his little meimei -making her
look younger than she was so as not to provoke
attention? (<--reading too much into it?)
But Serenity made many stops along trading routes
and market places - I bet she simply started
choosing and buying her own clothes once she was
more settled-in on the ship. She'd obviously get
money from Simon. By the time she was strong enough
to say things like "you're such a boob" she was
certainly strong enough to choose/buy her own clothes.

I always just assumed that Simon just got some of her clothes from home, or bought her new ones before breaking her out. He would've known they'd be on the run and she'd need clothes, so I think if he can plan her escape he can remember to pack her some dresses :)

Her clothes from when she was 14 wouldn't fit 3 years later. I'm sure Simon didn't have any clothes for her. They were probably borrowed at first and then Simon or someone else bought her new ones.

i beleive that in the first few episodes that river borrowed cloths because she wore both kaylee and inara's

My clothes from when I was 14 still fit 2 years later. Of course, I haven't grown in...a long time.

I think Simon probably bought her some new clothse. But in the beginning it's a mystery. I think I need to go back and watch the first few episodes again and see.

Isn't it possible that River with all of her feminine skills (Dancing) may have herself just altered the clothes. She may have come across some extra materials from time to time. Seems River might herself be able to take care of this issue.

I think some of it looks rather Kaylee-ish, so that scenario works best for me. Maybe the others picked up some stuff for her while they were off the ship.

In the pilot episode, the robe River wears at first is Inara's.

I assume that Simon had something with him for her, either bought or borrowed from someone, when he brought her to the ship. After that it's anyone's guess.
