It's because all the events in Serenity really happened in a "mirror-'verse". Because it all happened in the mirror-'verse, none of the events which occurred there reflect what happened in the regular, real 'verse.
WOW! This thread has damaged my brain. How far does that extend? Is everyone stil alive? Was that a joke that I am taking too seriously? Can I stop asking questions?
Noticed the hair, did notice the pants as well. But he was shirtless in low slung sweatpants, so I forgive. Chapter 8 around 48 odd minuites into the movie.

Alas, I'm afraid that's not the case. No goatees or super sexed-up women.

What does it mean?
Does it indicate a change in Nathan's political beliefs?
Did Joss tell him to do it?
Was it the result of a lost bet with Morena?
We must find out the answer to this!

Leave us not forget Chris, Nathan is Canadian and if he was like most Western Canadians he tried to get that bloated corpse of a Liberal Government out and a fresh new Conservative party in, so as the show was made when the Liberal party was raping... I mean ruling the governing body it was left. And the movie came out when the new Conservatives came in with their minority party it's now right.... so maybe, you could be right.
Interesting thoughtisall.

And I was afraid you were gonna discuss his change in suspenders from traditional leather to space-age rubberband-y material... Whew! I haven't put the finishing touches on my 50-page manifesto on the implications of that change, so I'm not quite ready to discuss it yet.
See now, I was wondering about those space-braces myself.
I mean I could see they would want to jazz up the costume a bit for the big budget movie, but what was with Wash?
He had on this weird pair of like hyper-lederhosen over his flight suit?

Kinda makes him look like Pinnochio, dunnit?
Maybe that's his character's heretofore unsuspected mystery: He's a 'bot. If they'd pulled the harpoon from his chest, they'd've found wiring and such. In the sequel, Mal and crew will pick up a newer O-3 model (without the extenders) from Washburne Cybernetics; though Zoe will be disappointed in its performance compared to the previous model (due to the lack of aforementioned extenders). This also explains why Wash refused to let Zoe have a child: Because he couldn't give her one. (NB: Again, for the British-ly inclined, he could and frequently did 'give her one'; I'm speaking 'of children' here.)
So the lederhosen look symbolizes Wash's desire -- reminiscent of the other Pinnochio of science fiction TV fame, Data -- to be a real boy.
Not Really,
zoid
P.S.
Oh, God, I hope not.
