Hello all you lovely computer folks! I'm wondering if I can borrow your collective brains for a bit. I have a question of a computery nature.
My computer at home keeps randomly shutting itself down and I don't know why. Any ideas? Here's what I know (it is a very little.)
It's a Dell laptop. An Inspiron 1100. Running Windows XP. Several years old. It is plugged in, I've checked and the battery and all that seems to be good. It's not running off the battery. Our anti-virus software was just updated a few months ago and seems to be working just fine.
I can't find anything wrong with the computer, but it'll just shut itself down with no warning.
So, any suggestions would be most helpful. I can't convince my grandparents to take it to have someone look at it or buy a new computer altogther, so my only other option at this time is fixing it myself. Halp! (Please!)

Aight, sounds like a classic overheating problem. Feel the exhaust ports on teh back of the laptop and make sure air is being blown out, it should be warm-ish. If its really hot or there is no air, then thats bad. Buy a can of compressed air and find the intake spots for the fans, and blow the air into it, hopefully removing the dust that might be causing the air to flow, in a not-so-well-type of way.
Oh and it shouldn't be months in between anti-virus updates.
Oh and also, make sure you aren't using it on pillows or blankets and such soft things, it blocks the intake of fresh air, and that could be why its overheating. If it is overheating you might notice the keyboard gets warm to the touch, which is not good.
Hope that helps!

Ooh, that is helpful. I'll try that. I hadn't thought about overheating. (like a car. weird.)
And what I meant by update is that we just bought new Norton software, we had 2003 or something on our computer, but we just got the 2006 version. Clarification.
Thanks!
