How to chat on IRC using mIRC.

Hi, everybody! I was idling on mIRC today on the fireflyfans.net server, and someone private messaged me while I was away from the keyboard.

It occured to me that some people might be facing some issues with the chat, whether they just don't like java chat, or they're looking for a good client to get online with.

I personally recommend the mIRC client with ircN scripts, both available at http://www.ircN.org .

Once you've downloaded mIRC, install it, then install ircN. Once you're all set, you might want to check out the readme to figure out how to tweak your client to your preferences (complete with sound capability, sound themes, colors, and the whole shebang). However, this is to help you with some basic stuff.

Getting Onto the Server: You can get onto a server, or change servers, by typing /server {servername} .

For example, to connect to the fireflyfans.net IRC network, you would type:

/server irc.fireflyfans.net

(You have the option to change port by typing the number of your port after the server name. If you don't type this number, mIRC will assume that you're connecting to port 6667, which is the most common for IRC servers. In fact, our very own fireflyfans.net is on this port!)

Joining the Chatroom: The way IRC works is as follows: You have a server. This server connects to a network (most of the time - sometimes, the server just chills out on its own). On the network, or the server, there are different channels to which you can connect to chat with people. These channels are the chatrooms, and they all start with the symbol #. For example, the fireflyfans chatroom on the irc.fireflyfans.net server is #firefly.

In order to connect to the channel, you type

/join #firefly.

This will put you in the #firefly chatroom, where you can usually find me or Haken or J-Sun or any number of other random fireflies floating around, often chatting about all sorts of weird topics.

Changing Your Nickname: Now, you should have filled out a little formlet when first you opened the client allowing you to put in things like your nickname and alias and whatnot. If you decide you'd like a different nickname, or just want to fool around by taking the nick BuffySummers or AngelsHotLuvuh, you can do so by typing

/nick {nickname}.

If the name isn't taken already, your nick will be changed.

hi, just another irc client recommendation.... i find that invision is very user friendly for any first time users...i don't think it works on macs though...anyway, if you're a big irc freak like me, you'll appreciate that invision will allow you to be connected to multiple servers at one time.
