"Batman Begins" was the only other serious contestant, as far as I'm concerned. Having seen all the other entrants as well -- with the exception of "Wallace and Grommit", and how did that get nominated for a freakin' Hugo?! -- I can say I voted "Serenity" with no hesitation, and feel fully justified in doing so.
"Harry Potter and the 'Gobbler' of Fire" was a good story for the worldly-unwise. "Batman Begins" breathed a new life into a franchise gone to seed; but do ya' really care? Only "Serenity" had the full-boat: novel characters, story and ideological concepts. It's a film for people who want fresh ideas and voices. And isn't that what the Hugo is really supposed to represent: novel (meaning 'original') science fiction/fantasy storytelling?
Respectfully,
zoid
P.S.
"The Chronicles of Narnia": a kiddy story; or a thinly veiled religious propaganda vehicle, your choice. Brought to us by Disney, with their usual flair for the obvious. Ugh...
P.P.S.
Where the aitch-eee-double-hockey-sticks is "King Kong"? With the exception of a couple of stretches of CGI-overuse, that was a great, dark story. Naomi Watts can convey more with a look than most actors can say with a thousand words... And don't tell me it couldn't get considered because of its release date, either. I got dragged into TCoN,tLtW&tW by my kids (in conspiracy with my wife), when I really wanted to see 'Kong'. So, that's no excuse.

Since it's the last day to vote on this, I thought that I would bump this thread so we can get in some last minute votes for the BDM

Yes! We won with 50.1% of the votes!
There were 13,008 votes in all and half of them were cast for Serenity.
I just had to gloat about it a little.
