And actually, you forgot "The Hunt for Red October". It was the first Jack Ryan movie and he was played by Alec Baldwin. He turned down Patriot Games because he didn't think it was as well writen. Baldwin to Ford is a good example of a franchise passing around the lead role sucessfuly(Sum of All Fears sucked). Though I'm not sure what it means that most folks don't even realize that they're playing the same guy.

As to the poll. It's still 43% to 42% for Nathan.

A friend pointed out to me that if the movie is set in the present day, Jones would be much older than ford himself because the movies were set in the 30's and 40's but made much later than that, so if ford is taking up the character at his age the movie would have to take place in the 80's...so just coldwar era james bond type stuff...lame. Whereas if Nathan did it they could set it in the 30's and 40's and have him play the character, or they can set it in the present day, think of it like this: what if Indiana Jones is a legend passed down from person to person like the Dread Pirate Roberts in Princess Bride! that would be awesome!

Perfect segue into where I wanted to go with this thread, crudman, coincidentally enough.

This age thing is definitely an issue, but let's take a closer look at the math.

Ford is 63, was about 37 when he starred as Indy. He's aged 26 years since then. First movie was set in 1936, so if we assume Indy is the same age as Ford, the new Indy movie would need to be set in 1962, not 1980.

There is a certain leeway there, as Ford could probably get away with his character being up to 10 years younger than him. Which would give us a movie set as early as 1952. Which is more reasonable.

However, Ford is going to have to play a character significantly younger than himself, for one simple reason: Nazis.

Anyone who follows the Indiana Jones series knows that to have a good Indy movie, you must have Nazis as bad guys. Raiders of the Lost Ark? Great movie: great bad guys. Temple of Doom? No Nazis. It sucked. Last Crusade: Nazis AND Sean Connery. It rocked.

Here's my stab at a plot: It's 1953. Indy is still working at the University, but maybe he's being urged to retire. But he wants to go on one last dig.

Indy goes to a site in Argentina and stumbles across Nazi war criminals who have fled there, trying to rebuild the reich.

That could set it up where he'd be older, but it'd be realistic, and but still make room for exotic locales, religious overtones, and Nazi bad guys.

The English language needs a second person plural.

Is this relaly an issue? Is a new Indiana Jones movie actually in the works?

If it is... I want Ford. I don't like it when different actors portray the same character in one series, unless they're clearly meant to show different ages. Sean Patrick Flannery already was young Indy in a now-defunct t.v. series, and Nathan is about the age Indy was shown to be in the first movie, isn't he? Besides, I can't see any way to keep Indy young without freezing time, and I don't care much for that, either.

They can do what they want to James Bond, but don't mess with Indiana Jones!

(Of course, if they wanted to show the old Indy sort of passing the torch to a younger colleague of similar temperamant, perhaps played by one Nathan Fillion, that would be okay...)

Except that Spielberg has said for years that since Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, he didn't think he'd ever be comfortable useing "Cartoon Nazis" in a film again, even Indy.

I'll agree that the best Indy movies had Nazis as villains, but I'm not ready to automatically assume the new one would/will suck without them. Temple of Doom's problems had less to do with the villains (whom I thought were cool) and more to do with the script and the supporting characters (Willie, Short Round).

Yep. There has been for years, but they've never gotten a script that all 3 principals (Lucas, Spielberg and Ford) could agree on. As of about a week ago, they announced that they had settled on a script. Spielberg has said he's taking the rest of this year off (the longest break he's taken in.... his whole career as far as I can tell), durring which time he'll be prepping Indy 4, and a Abe Lincoln bio-pic. Then, next year, he'll do his 2-movie routine that he's developed. First, and action/adventure movie for the summer, and an awards-seeking prestige movie for Christmas. He's done this to varrying degrees of success before (Jurrasic/Schindler, Lost World/Amistad, War of the Worlds/Munich). Actually though, the timings a bit different this time around, as the earliest we'll see Indy 4 is Christmas '07, but they may hold it till summer '08.

For the 50's and 60's settings the soviets would make good badguys. It is more PC to do cartoon communists than nazis.
