A nice story for thenext movie or an ongoing back story for series could be Shepard Book's History. Maybe the Blue handed guys could come looking for him.
Perhaps he was on board as a protector for river, assigned thejob by some "anti Blue sun" group.

I think Season 2 will start off with Zoe's brother coming on as Pilot. Technically I think in order to trade they have to have a registered Pilot on board because if I was a trading port I kind of would want the ship to be piloted by someone certified.

Lets face it River cant exactly go in for one of those.

Zoe is pregnet with Walsh child and contemplates getting off the ship. Simon and Kaylee get Jossed when they find marriage is harder then they thought compared to their flirting and love lorn looks.

Especially since half the time Simon thinks in the end they will settle on a Core world he will open up a practice and all will be right in the world. Unfortunately that would take Kaylee away from the outworlds and the machines she loves.

Simon tried to understand but he was born a Noble and the thought of spending the rest of his life in the black never occured to him.

It doesnt help that Kaylee strikes a friendship with Zoe'e brother Marcus ( Merchad Brooks) born rough with an easy smile and happy go lucky attitude.

Simon feels a little threatened.

Jayne is thinking about leaving the ship before he considers them 'family.' When he is contacted by a mysterious man who treatens to kill his mother unless he agrees to stay on board. Keep the Tams alive and report their location every seven days. The offer of weekly coin helps him make the right choice.

With all this trouble Mal is contacted by the Operative ( now sporting a face change but still English and black ) warning that the Parliment has authorized the use of Subject 19.

Subject 19 ( Lee Thompson Young ) from special Projects. Created specificly made to hunt down Psi-operators who somehow go rouge.

Rerouted synapes and enhanced organs ( the kind Tracy where smuggling ) added to advanced bio-feedback training and downloaded skills into a neural chip make him a threat as dangerous as River.

Unlike River he has no will, no emotion. His existance will be defined by one purpose that he will follow to the ends of the Black and back.

To kill River Tam and all with her.

Edit: Okay, I didn't read any of the ideas in the thread before I posted this. Browncoats seem to have many similar ideas about drama...

Season 2: Open, of course, to multiple suggestions...

Episodes 2x1 and 2x2 (naturally a two hour season opener): The Blue Hands are back! By virtue of all the Alliance marines who storm into the room after River's massacre on Miranda, word gets back to Blue Sun corp that River Tam is traveling with Malcolm Reynolds aboard Serenity. Mal is forced to take the ship farther toward the Rim to avoid pursuit. Mal becomes Captain Angst as he and the crew recover from Miranda.

2x3 - Obscure and low paying job on Rimworld that highlights how far removed from society and the core our crew has become. Zoe is acting strange, but they all chalk it up to Wash's death. Jayne gets to be a bad guy. Of course, nothing runs smooth. River saves the day!

2x4 - Inara-centric flashback episode. Parallel between Inara having difficulty finding jobs on the Rim and her memories of starting in the guild. Triggered by a skeezy client who knew her back in the day? Won't solve the mystery of why she joined in the first place, but will give some insight into her character.

2x5 - Kaylee-centric episode. She's dealing with the trauma of Miranda, and trying to figure out her new relationship with Simon. Maybe flash backs of Jubal Early. Nightmares abound. Over late night talks in the kitchen, various crew members help Kaylee work through the horror of battle. The final chat is with Zoe, which also helps Zoe come a little more to terms with Wash's death. Zoe is still acting strange. Eating more, too. Hmm.

2x6 - Start of four part arch. Part one, Jayne gets a letter from home - his Ma needs his help, she and Mattie are sick and about to die. Jayne actually begs Simon for help. With Mal's permission, Jayne and Simon take a transport back to Jayne's homeworld. Jane and Simon bond and argue about everything. Simon finally realizes that Jayne had a bit of a crush on Kaylee.

2x7 - It's a trap! Blue Sun and/or the Alliance have figured out that Jayne is with Mal's crew, and were using Jayne's family to get to Jayne, and from him to River and Simon. Imagine their delight when Jayne walks through the door, Simon in tow! By the end of the episode, Jayne escapes with his family, but Simon is captured.

2x8 - Ransom time. Blue Sun and/or the Alliance wave Mal and let him know they have his doctor. If they don't bring River Tam, Simon's life will be forfeit, yada yada yada. Mal and the crew argue and angst over the situation. Jayne still hasn't been heard from, and Mal assumes another betrayal. River, of course, sneaks out the back way to rescue her brother

2x9 - River's voyage to Jayne's homeworld, and maybe some flashbacks of her time in the Academy. Mal and crew flying after her once they realize she's gone. The Hero of Canton returns at last. Daring heroics? You bet! Final scene of the crew with Jayne's grateful and safe family in the kitchen of Serenity (Obviously, they need to relocate to where Blue Sun can't find them. They'll be on board for a episode or two until Mal can find them a planet, embarrassing Jayne the entire time). Jayne's ma asks Zoe when she's expecting. Zoe: "Expecting what?" Cut to black...

Pause for Fox to show 90-billion episodes of American Bloody Idol. Resume after February sweeps.

2x10 - Yup, Zoe's pregnant. Finally, a Zoe and Wash episode! How they fell in love and Mal's reaction to their marriage. Mal adjusts to the concept of Uncle Mal. Will Zoe leave the ship? As Jayne's family is still on board, Zoe talks over motherhood with Jayne's ma. Inara, Kaylee, and River each have unique advice of their own.

2x11 - Mal finds a planet for Jayne and family to settle on. The crew takes a few days away from petty theft to help the family get set up. Mal reminisces about growing up on Shadow. Kaylee talks about her home life. More drama about Zoe maybe getting off the ship and settling down, but of course she stays on in the end.

THIS IS SO HILARIOUS!!! I was talking about the future of Firefly with a friend of mine today. Heres what I came up with, so please don't anybody rip me a new one for my fantastical idea. WHAT IF... Either in Serenity 2 or in the 2nd season of Firefly, The Alliance is developing... TIME TRAVEL. Explain some scientific stuff with something to do with black holes, or some new machine, yada yada...

Mal hears about it or some crap, and seeing how Zoe is distraught and the crew is distant, decides, with the help of river, to go back to those few critical moments and bring back Wash and Book.Preferably Wash because of the comedic factor, and because book lived a full life.

All right, so they (being Zoe and Mal) go back save wash, and at the same time, river defeats and kills some of the blue hands.

The ending: Zoe and Wash reunited, possible baby, Kaylee and Simon, possible marriage later, Inara and Mal relationship progression, BAM!!!!

Either do this in Serenity 2 or in a 2 hour series premiere to kick the new season off with a bang. I can's stand the thought of Wash being killed off for good. He was so friggin funny. I will boycott the new series if he's not in it people!!!!
(JUST KIDDING)

AND WE ARE NOT KILLING ANYONE ELSE OFF!!!!

CURSE YOUR SUDDEN, BUT INEVITABLE BETRAYAL!!!

Here are my 2 cents on a second season (or another BDM?)

Kaylee, not Zoe is pregnant resulting in a "shotgun wedding" presided over by a very reluctant Mal as captain and Jayne with Vera ensuring Simon makes an honest woman of Kaylee.

Simon is more than a bit overwhelmed with his new responsibilities. Now he not only has to take care of River but also his new family. He almost has a breakdown from the stress.

Fun does ensue when Mal and Jayne take care of the baby.

River and Jayne form an odd friendship that sets Simon off further.

On the Mal/Inara front things are as angsty(is that a word?) as ever with a step forward and two steps back. They do make love but it separates them as they retreat from each other again.

Jobs are few and far between. There are rumblings from the Independants and Mal wants nothing to do with them. The Alliance tries to crack down on smugglers and others even harder thinking the smugglars are aiding the Independants.

Zoe is of an opposite mind and wants to join the new Indepdendant movement. She takes chances that she hasn't before and has several brushes with death.

In the season cliffhanger Niska appears again and uses YoSafBridge to get near the crew. He then kidnaps Inara and of course Mal and the rest of the crew comes to her rescue.
