Question about Serenity Movie

I haven't bought the Serenity DVD (still living in the past with my VCR) so this question may be answered there. But when I watched "Serenity" on TV there is a question that I had.
Near the beginning of the movie Simon injects something into Mal's forearm (right before they go out on the job). What is he injecting? What's that about?
Please help me out with an answer.

I thought it was an inoculation. I believe Mal refers to it as being "inoc-ed." I guess this is sort of like when soldiers go to foreign countries. Not that Joss ever really explores whether or not Mal is going to frequent the local brothels, but at least he's protected from various minor germs and diseases. Ha ha.
