They declined because they wanted to beat Singer by releasing X3 before Superman Returns. The sad thing is, Superman started production long before X3, and X3 is coming out first. Singer is making sure Superman is done right. Brett Ratner is directing, who i'm not too impressed by. Some of the writers had their hands in the other X-men movies, but the key writers were on Singer's team and went with him. Some of the writers for X3 have written for such movies as xXx: State of the Union and Fantastic 4. That isn't encouraging to me.
So yeah, to sum it up, i'm not too excited about this movie. I want it to be good, but i just have bad feelings about it. I really enjoyed the job that Singer did, and I wish Fox would have justed waited the two extra years instead of trying to cash in. I mean, they of all people should know that sequals can wait and still be hugely successful. Just look at Aliens, which came out 7 years after the original. At least it's good to know that Fox doesn't limit itself to only screwing over good TV shows. Oh wait, that isn't good to know. :(

I agree with you that Fox should've waited on Bryan Singer for X3. In the meantime, they could've went ahead with the Wolverine spin-off. Or the Magneto spin-off. Whatever. But I really wish they'd waited. This whole "We need to beat out Superman Returns." idea is just dumb. Let Supes have his day and make sure X3 is done with Bryan Singer at the helm. Oh well.

Anyway, I wasn't too optimistic when I saw the first trailer, but the second trailer is much better and has me really wanting to see the movie. I like the fact that Storm is the leader. She was always my favorite character. And it just makes sense that with the shake-up surrounding Jean's death, that she would take the lead. Also, having Dark Phoenix as a side story really doesn't bother me. Having to deal with what's become of Jean is like an added burden to everything that's already going on and doesn't strike me as something that could carry the film on its own. Finally, it would've been nice to see Gambit in X3. And I hear that the guy who plays Sawyer on Lost would've been perfect for the role. But the number of characters that have to be juggled in the short span of 2 hours is most likely what prevented Gambit from being in the film. It's a shame, but I think it would've been an injustice to give Gambit a very minor role.

But yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing X3. I hope it's at least good enough to make me buy the DVD and put it alongside X-Men and X2.

Given the ambitious scope of the first Fantastic Four film, I'm expecting a normal-sized guy in a big silly hat.

The situation was that Brian Singer backed out of X-men after X2 was finished to work on the new Superman film. The company then sat on the project for a while as they looked for a director to fill his shoes. They set a deadline for the release, and there were rumors that X3 was going to have t be rushed to get it finished in time, and that much of the cast would not be returning.

Thankfully, it appears that at least the majority of the cast has returned for this final film (called "The Last Stand" btw).

Rumors about a weak script and rushed CGI sequences aside, I'm very anxious to see it. But also dreading that it may not be nearly as good as X2.

I think I swallowed a bug...

I also heard that Singer was bought out. I thought he was originally going to do it but he got a better offer for doing Superman. Fox was unwilling to fork over the dough, and he had wanted to Superman so it was a no brainer for him. Fox should have offered him more. Sadly though, I've seen some screen shots and a few teasers and Superman looks like it'll be horrible. I have seen a lot of Brian Singer's movies but I have to say Superman looks gay and it looks like someone pumped air into his outfit b/c his body is big and his head is small. Oh well, don't think anyone could measure up to Chrisopher Reeve's performance in the orignals though. Good luck Brian and crew.

To elaborate more on Singer's departure, he did want to make X3 and X4, having planned a rather epic story involving Dark Pheonix that would have spanned 2 movies. However, Tom Rothman, head of Fox, kept delaying a decision as to whether or not they would greenlight the movies. This is the same thing that was done on X1&2. Rothman has been somewhat notorius for his lack of faith in the X-Men series. He expected the first to bomb, which is why he cut the budget and schedule just as shooting began. There was also last-minute budget trimming on 2.

So, while waiting for the decision to greenlight 3, the Superman job came up. Singer tried to work things out with Fox, offering to do X3 after Superman, as stated above. When Fox refused, he went on to Supes, taking his writers, and James "Cyclops" Marsden with him.

That led to the decision to rush X3 out, in order to beat Superman to release. Originally, Matthew Vaughn was hired as director, and he helped the writers come up with their "7 day script" which kills off 2 of the higher-profile (and more expensive) cast members, as well as the one who jumped ship with Singer. He did fight to get Kelsey Grammar as Beast (a great choice IMO). Vaughn then quit 6 weeks prior to shooting for undisclosed reasons, though the rumor is he was having major conflicts with Rothman. Brett Ratner was brought on board at the last minute, made a few changes to the script, mainly involving locations, and they started shooting.

They do have a very, very tight deadline for the effects. But so did the last two, so we'll see how that turns out. I'm not a huge fan of Ratner as a director. His Rush Hour movies were entertaining, but not really close in tone or style to what X-Men should be. The closest he's done tonally would be Red Dragon. Though I have yet to see all of it, what I have seen I thought was fairly pedestrian and dull. That someone can make a dull Hannibal Lector movie with such a great cast is very worrying to me.
