In the commentary for Shindig, it's mentioned by Shawna Trpcic that the black leather strap that Zoe wears around her neck is a marraige band for her union with Wash.

However, in the flashback of Mal showing Zoe around the ship for the first time, Zoe is wearing it before she ever met Wash!

I suppose Mal's memory isn't what it used to be. ;)

I always took it to mean that when they got married, Zoe and Wash couldn't really afford anything new or fancy, like a ring or whatnot.

So Zoe just dedicated the leather strap she already had as a marriage bond, something circular and never ending, that she wouldn't ever take off after that.
