Personally I’m glad it looks like they are going to let Magneto be Magneto in this film! Finally we get to see his virtually limitless mastery of magnetism.
I was kind of hoping Apocalypse would show up on the movie franchise sooner or later…

I'd thought about that, too, Storymark, but there were ways it could've been successfully incorporated. (I even started a rough draft for it, myself, about 20 years ago.)
I agree with you, though, in that it couldn't have been done (started) with the third film, unless they'd incorporated other elements from it into the previous films. As such, they'd probably have to have realistically waited a few more films before they started the Dark Phoenix saga.
Either that, or have started incorporating those elements from the start -- which (as you pointed out) they didn't.
I also would've had the battle with the sentinels in space (I think that was issues #99 & 100), leading to the crash in Jamaica Bay (issue #101?) in a film prior to the saga -- which they also decided to skip.
Still, I believe that a direct adaptation could've been done successfully (if, as we agree, the background stuff was properly incorporated into the films leading up to it). I mean, if I could've outlined it 20 years ago, I'm sure these people who get paid to do those types of things should've been able to pull it off today.
(I think I started my draft by introducing the X-men in Scotland, in the aftermath of the Proteus story. At the time, I thought I did a good job with it. Although, that was 20 years ago, and what I thought was "good" 20 years ago, today I might look at and shudder.)

Back in the late 1980's I tried to figure out how long it would take if they did the entire Dark Phoenix saga on film (staying true to the comics), and I figured at least 3 films (or two very long ones).
I thought the Dark Phoenix story was excellent as written, and they should've tried to film it that way (the whole finding Kitty Pryde, the White Queen, Mastermind's manipulation of Jean Grey, the Hellfire Club, her destroying planets, etc, the final confrontation on the moon). I think it was nine issues, altogether. And I say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. When you have a masterpiece, why tinker with it?
I'm deeply disappointed.
Hey Cartoon, yeah I haven't been around much in a while. I haven't really seen any threads that captured my interest, so I've actually been working. Things are going good for me, how about you?
Anyway, I've never actually read the comics, but me and my brother lived on the TV series back in the day. As I recall, they had several episodes devoted entirely to the dark Phoenix arc, which was really great. That's why I was hoping we'd get a movie (or two) devoted to it, but that doesn't look to be the case. In fact, the more I hear about this movie, the more disappointing it sounds. It sounds like they're not only going to deviate from the comics, but also the first two movies, which I think will ruin the whole thing. It's the same mistake they made with the third Harry Potter. They went, "well, not only are we going to basically ignore the book, but we're going to completely change things from the first two movies too." And the third movie turned out to be crap, IMO, although lots of people seemed to like it.
I'm afraid that's what's going to happen with X3 as well, especially since the movie is going to center around Storm for some weird reason. It's not that I dislike Storm, it's just that Jean is coming back as the Phoenix, so it should center aruond her, right? At least, you'd think so. Sigh.

According to this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly, they are planning a few spin-offs: one focusing on Hugh Jackman's wolverine, one focusing on the younger set of mutants, and a magneto prequel.

i feel rather negative about this movie. It's not on purpose, but many of the horrible rumors about the movie have been confirmed and I have very little faith in the people behind the screen. I enjoyed the first two a lot, especially the second one. But both of those were done by Bryan Singer and his team of writers. Singer got offered Superman Returns, which was his dream job, so he took his team of writers and left X3 for that. He told Fox if they would wait two years for him, he'd glady come back and do the movie with his team of writers. Fox, being the greedy bastards they are, couldn't wait and pushed forward with it. Everything in this movie has been beyond rushed. I heard that Joss offered to do it, but would need a little more time to get it done. They declined because they wanted to beat Singer by releasing X3 before Superman Returns. The sad thing is, Superman started production long before X3, and X3 is coming out first. Singer is making sure Superman is done right. Brett Ratner is directing, who i'm not too impressed by. Some of the writers had their hands in the other X-men movies, but the key writers were on Singer's team and went with him. Some of the writers for X3 have written for such movies as xXx: State of the Union and Fantastic 4. That isn't encouraging to me.
So yeah, to sum it up, i'm not too excited about this movie. I want it to be good, but i just have bad feelings about it. I really enjoyed the job that Singer did, and I wish Fox would have justed waited the two extra years instead of trying to cash in. I mean, they of all people should know that sequals can wait and still be hugely successful. Just look at Aliens, which came out 7 years after the original. At least it's good to know that Fox doesn't limit itself to only screwing over good TV shows. Oh wait, that isn't good to know. :(

Not too bad. No one's threatening to kill me with their brains anymore, so I feel a bit safer.

Oh, well I saw the TV series, too. And as much as I enjoyed the TV series, it didn't do justice to the books. The books were classics -- particularly the Clairmont years (mid-70's through late 80's). (I stopped reading around 1988, so I have no clue as to what's happened since then.)
There are things I don't like about the books (as with everything else in life), but I can think of few comic book runs better than the Uncanny X-Men (issues #94 through about #220). (EDIT: I just checked online. The Dark Phoenix saga ran from issues #129 through #137.) Probably the first 150 issues or so of the Amazing Spider-man is the only other run I'd compare to that run of the Uncanny X-Men.)
Anyhow, those issues would probably cost a fortune to get now, unless they've reprinted them, that is. But, I'd recommend them to anyone who likes not just the X-Men, but comics -- period.
Chris Clairmont's writing and John Byrne's art of the Dark Phoenix saga was top-rate.

Yeah, welcome to the world of Hollywood adaptations. Sometimes they get it close, but most of the time they mess it up royally.

Yeah. I was never a big fan of Storm, either. A chick who controls the weather. Big deal. (I don't care much for meteorologists, either.)
If anything, I think they should've hired Chris Clairmont to oversee the writing of all of the X-Men films. His run as writer on that series stands second to none. It certainly wouldn't have hurt to have him aboard in some capacity. But, no, that would actually make sense, and Hollywood (if nothing else) is ever consistent in never making any sense.
