I'm a little new to this site, so please excuse me if someone else has expressed sentiments similar to mine. And also please excuse my heated rambling, but this is starting to drive me insane.

Firefly is full of interesting and varied characters. It is a vivid and enthralling universe. So why in the gorram hell is it that people can only write about two characters?!! I've looked at so many Simon and Kaylee pairings it's pathetic. Now, mind, I don't have anything against those two characters, but it's not the only pairing that can be written about. And I'm not just going after this site, there's other's as well. I'm also not trying to diminish authors that do write about other parings (obsidiangirl and Ana, you guys rock). Just for once, though, I'd like to see a little variety.

I fully well expect to be flamed to a scorching crisp. My only hope is to encourage some more diversity among Firefly fic writers. So in parting, keep flying everyone.

P.S. I know I don't have a story of my own posted on any site. But then you wouldn't want to read the absolute crap I'm sure to post, then, would you?

Personally, i would like to have some stories about Mal and Zoe....there's gotta be some tight moments there. with Kaylee /Simon...it's all about the sex...which is a good thing mind you...but it's a little played.....

I've only been around a few months, so I don't know the whole fanfic history, but it seems the Simon/Kaylee lots of sex thing is just recent. A while back it was a lot of Mal/Inara shipping.

The S/K folks are writing some really good stuff (I do love you guys and don't stop writing!), but I agree with deepgirl in that I wish there were more people writing Mal and the rest, and more story stories. NC17 can be fun, but when I need a few minutes to rest my brain at work, NC17 just ain't what I'm looking for!

Shameless self-plugging follows: I'm working on a fairly broad (as in all 9 BDHs) story, sequel to the Fish Job, but I have to write the whole gorram thing before I post. It's just how I am! I can't wait to share, but it'll still be a few weeks at least. grrr.

Yay!!! Sequel to Fish Job! And my Econ class will be over so I can beta read again!

On the S/K thing, I think its just the wave of fanfic. It will pass and then we'll all say, why aren't they about Simon and Kaylee.

I have a fun idea for Jayne if I ever get going, or get up enough confidence to post. Or if anyone wants to try a collaboration let me know.

Well, there are a lot of other pairings on the site. You just have to look for them. It would be nice to be able to search for stories based on specific characters you'd like to read about though. You can do that on fanfiction.net.

Some people prefer to write stories centered around favorite characters whose relationships were established in the series/movie.

I truly despise pairings like Jayne and Kaylee or River and ANYONE from the series. . . but I don't much often complain about it.

We all have our favorites. Don't like what's being posted, well, start writing your own :)

The thing is, people write about what inspires them. Can't be dictated.

And at the moment, the Simon/Kaylee shippers seem to be the most inspired. It's nobody's fault.

Mind you, I would prefer stories with a different focus, too, but it's not really something anyone has the right to be angry about.

Like Leiasky says, the only solution is to write something yourself. Or hope. :)

I have lots of ideas for Jayne - just have never done any kind of fic writing for eaons and wouldn't know where to start!!
And no, they don't involve any existng crew members but rather new and interesting characters...that could be recurring... or not....depending where I go with the ideas...

Wow, this is the best news I've heard in quite a while! Just a few weeks and there'll be a Fish Job sequel? Suh-weet. (BTW, I love that you wait until it's complete before you post. It's just how I am!)

But to the OP, the s/k flood is a recent trend. There's a whole lotta other stuff in the BSR - you just have to dig for it...

The recent trend towards NC17 would mirror what I saw with x-files fanfiction over time though as the series faded a bit *sniff*, especially the darker stuff. Not that I object, some of the best authors of x-files fanfiction wrote mostly R/NC17 MSR. But I think the biggest thing that Firefly fanfic has going against it is that the show didn't last long enough. The 'verse is not as well developed and you are somewhat limited in your cannon storytelling options. This hurts you since most people don't want to write novel length stories with proper character and plot development, so they really rely on the back story developed by the show and what thier readers know about it.

I hope if the comics and other canon material continue you'll see more balanced fics being written as people have more back story and such to work with.

Oh... I don't think its so much a Simon/Kaylee thing as Kaylee/EveryCharacterInTheVerse thing. She gets paired with everyone... but can you really blame people? She so gorram adorable.

I will agree that right now, Simon/Kaylee pairing seem to be in vouge. This is fine. They are inspiring a lot of great writing. Personally, my favorite couple is Mal/Inara, which is why I'm writing about them (taking a break from ch 6 right now). If you like Mal/Inara, you should definately read my story (*cheeks go red with embaressment after her shameless self-plug...which I guess means it wasn't quite shameless? Okay, maybe it was...*). Also, I would recommend Kaynara, Mal4Prez, and 2x2 if you are looking for good M/I fics, among many others (these are just the people I remember off the top of my head).

Also, as was suggested, you might just want to write your own fanfic. In never hurt anyone (*thinks about this more*). Well, you never think that it will hurt anyone, anyway...
