Yeah. I can't get any graphics online with dial-up, but I saw it during "24" on Monday night. Looked really good.

Although, I'm an old Marvel Comic reader from the 1960's through the late 1980's, so I'd probably go see it anyhow.

From the looks of it, I would say that Jean Grey is turning into the Dark Phoenix. I would gather that the consequences of that transformation, however, will more likely be carried over into the fourth film, and probably just be getting started in this one.

Still waiting for them to throw the Sentinels into the mix. What're they waiting for??

Well actually, Cartoon, according to IMDB, this is going to be the last of the X-men feature films. So they're pretty much going to have to do the whole dark Phoenix arc in one movie. I've also heard that there's supposed to be Sentinels in this movie, though I don't know for sure. Anyway, I am definitely looking forward to seeing this movie.

Having read a plot synopsis a few months ago, which seems to match the two trailers very closely, I have my reservations.

For one, the Dark Pheonix story is a very small part of the movie, which focuses more on the mutant cure. This is very dissapointing to me, becuase before he was more or less forced to leave, Bryan Singer had a big Pheonix epic in mind that would have spanned movies 3&4.

The other thing that bothers me is the liberties they are taking with the universe. Some small, like developing romances between characters who have never gone that route, while ignoreing some of the classic romances from the comic. Some liberties are bigger, like the deaths of at least 3 major characters, and others loosing their powers. That, and they have my least favorite character from the films, Storm, as the central figure in this film - but that's a personal beef.

However while they are saying this is the last X-Men movie, it's probably just the last from FOX. Marvel is taking back rights to a lot of their characters, since they made a deal last year to start producing their own movies. They already got back Hulk, and the X-Men are next - though FOX is keeping the rights to Wolverine and Magneto for solo spin-offs. Spider-man and Fantastic 4 are staying with Sony and FOX, respectively.

Hadn't heard that anywhere. Though they might have needed to crib some story from elsewhere. The script they are shooting was written in 7 days -- acoording to the writers and the previouse director (Matthew Vaughn, who dropped out 6 weeks prior to shooting, over "creative differences").

After reading what you had said I must applaud. I used to read the comics about 10 years ago so I'm a bit fuzzy on that. But I have been looking into what they are doing with the movie and I have found similar information.
I have heard Storm is at the center of atention, the saddest part is, she gave Fox the demand of more movie time or she's gone, and we can see what has happened from that.

I have been very disappointed in the fact that Gambit will not be in the series at all. The writers gave the horribly lame excuse where they coudln't time him in right. A good writer wouldn't have a problem with it in my opinion.
It looks like a good action movie, but I think this movie is taking a much different leap than the other X-Men series has. I can only pray this movie turns out good.

If so, that's disappointing, Queen (BTW, long time no see. How're things?)...

Back in the late 1980's I tried to figure out how long it would take if they did the entire Dark Phoenix saga on film (staying true to the comics), and I figured at least 3 films (or two very long ones).

I thought the Dark Phoenix story was excellent as written, and they should've tried to film it that way (the whole finding Kitty Pryde, the White Queen, Mastermind's manipulation of Jean Grey, the Hellfire Club, her destroying planets, etc, the final confrontation on the moon). I think it was nine issues, altogether. And I say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. When you have a masterpiece, why tinker with it?

I'm deeply disappointed.

I couldn't really see them doing the Dark Pheonix story exactly as done in the comics. For one, there's a lot more back-story that would need to be told to set everything up properly. The other problem I would have with it, as cool as a story as it was, I don't think it'd fit the style and thematic nature of the films. To go from X1 & 2 as fairly realistic (within reason) films about mutants, to throwing in Alien empires, cosmic beings, planet eating, and a big fight on the moon would have been taking things too far from what worked in the previous films.

Which is not to say I don't think they could have made a killer Dark Pheonix story, just that I don't think it would have worked as a direct adaptation. Changes would need to be made, as they were for the previos films.
