Hey guys

Terrifried, Farscape rocks.
The muppets never got in my way, it's actually refreshing to see a few creatures that don't look like humans in drag.
I agree that it's nothing like FF really, except that it's quality stuff. I can't stand fluff entertainment. Must. Use. Brain. I discovered a spider living on my television last week when I went to program the vcr, so that tells you how often I turn the thing on, but I just finished watching the last of Joss (Angel 5) with one of my best friends (at his house, silly), and now we're watching Farscape from the beginning. It was the only logical thing to do. My friend has never seen it, so I will have the joy of witnessing a conversion, and I love being there to watch regular people turn into maniacs.

BTW, OT, and too bad about it... Deadwood I gobbled as greedily as FF. I heard an interview on public radio with the creator, walked directly to the video store after the interview, watched the first ep, and cancelled all reasonably cancellable plans till I'd seen the whole first season. It's from one of the premium cable channels, so only a dozen or so eps per season. Season 2 is on now and getting rave reviews.

I never watched Farscape when it was on, however I am borrowing the DVD's from a friend. Currently I'm into the first five or six episodes of Season 2, but it just isn't grabbing me. It really enjoyed the end of season 1 with the whole Talon plot, but other than that it just never clicks with me. Maybe it's all the cheesy Aussie guest stars, and the accents can get real annoying after a while (and I am an Aussie!)

I don't know why, I just can't seem to get into it. Generally if I have a show on DVD and it really grabs me, I will not be able to stop watching episodes. It has taken me almost two months to get through the first six episodes of Farscape S2. I think some of the surreal episodes really throw me out, and I would really like an overall purpose to each season to be present, like Buffy, Angel, Veronica Mars, etc...

Still, I will keep plodding on in hopes that it does grab me again!

If it helps any, the big plot of Season 2 does really kick in around half-way through the season. Watching one of the main characters (not saying who for spoiler's sake) going totally insane gets pretty fun.

That, and the 2 three parters of the season (involving a royal wedding and bank heist, respectively) are some of my favorite story arcs in the series.

I never thought of either Rygel or Pilot as muppets, nor puppets, especially Pilot. He is as well realised a character as the rest of them, and remarkably emotive with those big golden eyes of his.

I love both shows, but Firefly is tops.

I got into Farscape in the second season and was vastly confused, but entertained so I stuck with it and eventually caught up when the DVDs started coming out.

I think a part of why I liked it was that I felt that Rockne O'Bannon went to the 'Joss Whedon School of Torturing Your Characters (and fanbase).' Nothing was ever easy. Anything anyone did had repercussions. Not always immediately, but they would happen.

Both shows also used humor and used it well, to help switch off from being too horribly tense all the time so you'd want to lit your wrists. (As mentioned above, the cartoon episode has got to be an absolute clasic.)

But both shows also owed a bit to the first show with a diverse group of people of (at many) times who were largely untrustworthy, being 'stuck' together due to circumstances: Blakes 7. This was the ultimate anti-Star Trek (the bad guys were the 'Federation.') All our 'heroes,' as on Firefly and Farscape, were criminals (escaped convicts in the cases of B7 and FS) but with our central focus hero being an ultimate "good" guy who is there due to being on the losing side of a disagreement with the government (Blake was a revolutionary who was caught and framed for a different crime to discredit his cause, Crichton hit a wormhole by accident and when he came out accidently caused the death of the Peacekeeper commander's brother and found his only refuge with the escaping criminals that the authorities were trying to recover, and Mal...well we all know his story, right?;-)

All three shows also had the central characters struggling against a totaltarian society: The Federation, the Peacekeepers and the Alliance.

But I also feel that each was better than the one preceeding it. Blake was great; a breath of fresh air from what was on TV and in the movies at the time. Farscape was better; it had a better balance with trauma and humor. Frankly, Blake went down hill after the third season...WAY down hill. But then, the Beeb had spent the past few seasons trying to get rid of it, so no surprise there. And Firefly...this is the pinnacle. Great balance in moods. Fantastic characterization and great plots. But then I expected no less from Joss having watched both Buffy and Angel from the get-go.

So is Farscape an acceptable fix? Yes and no. (Yeah, it's cop-out time )I miss both shows, but I miss having new Firefly episodes just a mite bit more.

Egads, but I'm being long winded today. Sorry.

Just watched TPW again on DVD. It's disturbing just how much of it they cut, really. So much good stuff hacked out, damn them to hezmana.

It also reminded me how much I really love Farscape. And the behind the scenes thing just hammered it home. Gods, I miss it.

I think the return of Firefly/Serenity owes alot to the campaigns we did for saving Farscape... irrespective of who got to return on TV and who got to return in cinemas.

Just don't ask me right now which I think is the better series.

If you mean Chiana, oh my yes. Also, the first character ever to appear in the opening titles of a TV series in the middle of having sex.

Plus, Gigi Edgley is the MC at the Serenity Cubed con. Frelling drad, man!

But, I must add that there are those that say Claudia Black is not attractive. Having met her in person I can reveal that such people have not got an inkling of a clue. She's lovely, she really is.

Mind you, try and find an unattractive female on Farscape and you'll be hard pressed to do so.
