totally agree! for the first seen of Farscape you can watch the episodes in any order and they make sense...if Firefly had gotten it's well deserved chance to continue it probably would have gotten more complicated to "jump into"

complicated plots are a double edged sword though, it's what made Farscape great and also probably what killed it as it was much more difficult to "pick up" the story after season 2

I suspect that Firefly owed quite a lot to Farscape.

The idea of a crew that's forced together by necessity and liable to backstab and disagree with each other... I remember Farscape was this grand cure for Star Trek dullness when it came along.

Plus this idea of the ship being another character (granted, this is somewhat more important in farscape.)

I loved the show, big fan of Browder- but slowly lost interest after the second season. The humour started to ebb away from the script. The muppets stopped being cool and amusing and started getting in the way of suspension of disbelief, which I needed more as the series became increasingly serious and less jokey.

Firefly, to me, is much the superior show.

Much the same comments as everyone else: Farscape and Firefly are two different animals. For me personally, Farscape was good and worth viewing, but rarely reached it's full potential.

However, it's strongpoint is everything felt really, really alien. Nothing was familiar, and you always got the feeling our human protagonist, Crichton, was a long way from anything remotely home-like. That and one of the best true "aliens" since the Vorlons! IMO.

It was dead good for oneliners. Crichton was always outclassed and just hanging in there or getting out of trouble by being human.

One of my favourite bits was when the crew were criticising the crap standard of human senses and casually demonstrated reading the makers name off a sink or something that was miles away.

Farscape is absolutely a great firefly fix. Like Hoperative said, its similar to firefly because the crew is such a diverse mess. It also has extraordinary writing and acting.

The key to watching it is to go with whatever is being shown. It also helps to see the alien characters more as characters, not as aliens. I showed it to a friend, and he was startled by the aliens. I had forgotten that they were aliens; they were just other characters to me. Suspension of disbelief (if thats the phrase) is pivitol.

It also (due to its longer running time) managed to do what Firefly could not, and that is huge, season spaning arcs. This makes for incredible television.

But you should start midway through season one (with DNA Mad Scientist). This is when the show really found its way (after a few earlier eps., in which it stumbled around.

For any Sci-Fi or Firefly fan, Farscape is must-see tv

Then there's that S4 episode where they reach Earth, and the alien characters actually do comment on humanity --it's set up like a TV news special, with interviews of the crew.

yeah, they did some brilliant things with formats and styles and allsorts, they just didn't seem afraid at all of experimentation, It didn't always work, but they had a bloody good crack at it. I loved the animatronics as well, after a while Sparky and Pilot just cease to be 'muppets' and just become characters, like the human cast.

Also three cheers for their handling of the whole romantic together-but-not situation - they let the relationship develop but didn't bore the audience, they kept them apart but kept the chemistry sizzling, and hey, 10/10 for inventiveness!

Somebody mentioned SG1 though - its not a bad show, I do enjoy it, but is anyone else enjoying it much more now that Ben and Claudia are in it? (and now that Daniel has developed some balls, but, whole other rant...)

Vala, using that communication thingie bob jumps into Daniel, eight months plus pregnant, and after a quick jaunt to check out the half naked men in the locker room (in Daniels body still, oh imagine the fun he's going to have explaining that one) proceeds to tell her story about getting immaculately knocked-up by the priors only know who, marrying some guy, helping in plots to blow up thousands of people, and finally setting sail for Earth in the enemy ships. In an extremely funny roundabout (mostly techno-babble free) way.

I mean, what was an almost totally expositional and potentially dire episode was made so entertaining. I couldn't believe it. Methinks its not just Farscapes cast that SG1 have borrowed.

Another point I'll raise about Farscape, is that it found, IMO, the best way - or a least a new one - in which to kill off a major character on the show, without actually getting rid of them.

I thought the 2 Johns sub-plot in season 3 was a lot of fun. A clever way of giving signifigant screen time to all the characters, spread across 2 ships in seperate parts of the universe, and yet still have the lead in every story.

And the death of Chrighton Black (or was it green?) was one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the series. But we still got to see the hero again in the next episode (as a cartoon, no less).

It was the fact that they'd got them together, so, perfect. Other Crichton still out there, not perfect, all going well, worm hole information accessed,he going home! brilliant. He dies, in nasty way. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! And then she goes back to where the other Crichton is and its just a whole mess of crap that is tragic and intriguing and human and unpredictable and damn fine television.

I want Farscape back! *sob*
