In the movie, Zoe's 'Mare's Leg' carries some sort of telescopic sight. Very discrete it is, too.
Is this sight based on anything real? Or did Joss just tape a tube of some sort on the weapon?

The weapon isn't accurate enough to make a telescopic sight useful, probably just there for looks.

looks like a .45-70 cartridge case or the like. In other words, it's not a real optic.
That said, I'd say a red-dot type optic would work just fine for such a thing. The 8-10" or so of barrel will give you plenty of intrinsic accuracy at the ranges you'd use a red dot for, provided the muzzle ain't buggered up.
That said, using that accuracy might prove difficult -- the ergos of the Mare's leg ain't the best.

While using such a sight might be a bit tricky (because, really, a Mare's Leg just ain't a practical weapon) there's no reason it couldn't work.
I think StarSong had it right. That it is just a 45/70 case prettied up to look like a sight. Still, it might be a red dot type sight. It might also be a laser sight (which would work very well for a hand gun). There are all sorts of new & interesting things coming out in the gun world. Maybe Joss found one?

Seems tough to use a scope with a sawed-off stock.

While its true that a Mares Leg is not a wholely accurate weapon, it is fair to say that the weapons in FIrefly and Serenity are not always supposed to be what they appear. The guns resemble contemporary firearms yet have different properties.
Think of the episode Jayenestown, jayenes old partner carries a modern pump action shotgun, yet the gun also emits a high pitched drone when cocked making it slightly different.

The Mare's Leg is chambered in 44-40, and for a pistol, is pretty damn accurate. The originals aren't as accurate as a modern pistol, to be sure, but a new one will do you fine, with good ammunition. The sight (If it is one) is probably a red dot or "reflex" type sight which is extremely effective for quick target aquisition and accurate shot placement. There is actually a butterfly mount for a sight on the gun itself, and though ergonomically it wouldn't be the easiest thing to use, it wouldn't be impossible. I honestly think the best thing though would be a laser. Also, the high pitched whine, while never fully explained, could be something to do with the weapons firing caseless ammunition, and requiring electricity to fire. This could be entirely incorrect, however.
If anyone gets nosy...Shoot em.
Shoot em sir?

The thing is, this is just a TV show (yes, I feel somewhat heretical for saying "just").
Anyway, whether the thing actually works or not isn't the point. Joss Wheden could put anything on the Mare's Leg that he wanted. It wouldn't have to actually work well. It doesn't have to be an actual sight either for that matter. But, it might be.
Is there any way to send e-mail to Joss himself & ask this question?
