This may fall in the category of rumor-mongering, but it sounds good to me.
I also participate on a DVD board and was lamenting the lack of any really cool features for the R1 Serenity DVD that the UK and Aussie fans got with their release. This was one of the replies:
"They're saving a lot of those extras (and supposedly a lot more including a yet to be recorded group cast commentary) for the Shiny Edition, which is now all but certain to happen (supposedly Universal is now open to some kind of sequel as well, whether or not it's theatrical is another question). The preliminary numbers is over 2 million copies in the first month alone, keeping pace with Wedding Crashers (this is a very good thing)."
Since I hadn't heard anything about a possible "Shiny Edition" at any point, I thought I'd pass this along to y'all. (There was also mention that Joss and Chris Buchanan had planned a "Shiny Edition" from the beginning so no comments about double dipping.)

Cool. Still not official enough to start waving my arms and yelling "yippie" in the streets, but every little bit of hope helps.
I've assumed from the start that there would be a special edition down the road, and the extra special features on the foreign DVD's only furthered that belief.
But planned or not, it's still a double-dip. The only time I ever give a studio a pass on such things is when they let the consumer know - up front with the initial release - that there will be a subsequent release down the road, as was the case with the Lord of the Rings films, and more recently Sin City.

Maybe not, but it's certainly enough to make us drive around with our windows open singing "The Hero of Canton" at the top of our lungs. (Any event is worth of THAT.)

After the excellent sales and the foreign releases having more special features, I thought it was pretty much a given that there would be a special edition released here. I like that "shiny edition" name though, hopefully we get a shiny tin with the serenity logo painted on it.
I don't think Universal has ever really been closed to the idea of a sequel, they're likely just waiting to see what the best way to do it would be. I'm predicting a mini-series for the Sci-Fi channel.

Shiny Edition huh?
That sounds great!
And even if you do consider it double dipping I don't care!!
I am more than willing to pay for it. In fact, I'm willing to buy multiple versions of the same DVD with different covers (and that is something that I would never do with any other movie) because, frankly, money talks. The more Universal makes off of this, the more willing they'll be to continue it.

I would definately buy a "Shiny Edition." there are plenty of extras that those of us in America didn't get. i would gladly give them more money, i don't mind. i'm the kind of person who owns both the theatrical and extended editions of Lord of the Rings and Sin City. but they HAVE to call it the "Shiny Edition." it's just too awesome of a name not to.
they have to release this. Universal would be stupid not to. what kind of Hollywood studio would say "no" to more money?
