I just figured that Mal would have phrased the description of his childhood in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" differently if there had been a Dad around. His whole character strikes me as someone who never knew his father.
Agreed. I don't think his dad was around to watch his son grow up. I like to think he would be proud of his son though.

I also assume that this is fan created.
However, the designs are awesome, and if they actually did decide to go for a slightly "cartoonier" style (not meant in a derogatory way, I totally dig it) with the official comics then I'd still be down with it.
