The first is a 16 year old Mal and his father Joseph (about 15 years before the events of Firefly/Serenity), Zoe with Wash's body (post-Serenity), a young Alliance-friendly Book and a rough sketch for a Sihnon harrier.

Heh. I like how Mal's dad looks like Harrison Ford. 
And how Young Book looks kinda like Gunn.

Not quite up to snuff with the art from the first Serenity mini, but by no means bad at all. But then, that's just concept art, let's see how it looks when it's inked and properly colored. I like how it's looking like they're gonna cover pre-Firefly and post-Serenity. And there's no conceivable way I could complain about seeing Shepherd Book's past.
Good stuff. Gonna have to make damn sure the clerk at the comic shop puts this on hold for me when it comes out.

I personally assumed it was actual comic concept art. Comic concept art usually isn't that hard to get your hands on; read Wizard and you'll see a lot of it. My guess was that the artist for the new Serenity comics posted this somewhere online, and it was found for us to view. Or maybe it's just some fan art. Or hell, maybe we're both right. Could be that the artist is a fan.

I just figured that Mal would have phrased the description of his childhood in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" differently if there had been a Dad around. His whole character strikes me as someone who never knew his father.
But you're right, they could have met, especially later on. That's a cool idea.
And to add what I forgot to say before: These look amazing. I love the image of Book and of young Mal, especially. All the proportions are worked so well into a leaner, younger look!
