As somebody who's active in both forums, thought I'd throw in my .02...
I've been a poster at both the Fox Board and this one for the past 9 months or so, and I think that while the feel (in terms of both layout and tone of the discussions) of both boards can be vastly different, the point has been made that we are, in the end, all Browncoats. That's the important thing to remember.
However, I believe that, despite Sarah's initial negative reaction to semantics (I've actually always called the OB the Fox Board, but the simple fact is, it *was* the official forum. Doesn't make it BETTER, it just made it official.) Tzegha and the other Fox Board regulars genuinely meant to NOT ruffle the feathers of the regulars at this board.
Rather, I think the main concern was duplicating long-running threads such as the Serenity Saloon (aka "The 'Loon), the "Last" and the various cast threads, etc. over here, and that concern was out of respect for the board's current members who never hung out at the Fox Board and might feel "invaded," as well as bandwidth/disk space concerns for Haken. Because no one wants to see a fan site suddenly under stress, when it's being maintained out of pocket, purely as a gift to fellow fans (whereas the Fox board was a paid for thing, so there was never much of an effort to curb our posting habits).
It's also a matter of different social groups--with different patterns of behaviour--all within the same fandom. Being a media fan (and a convention-going media fan, at that) for the last 15 years, I'm much more used to fans of the same show hanging out at ALL the message boards rather than just one, hence my posting here, at TWoP, on the UK SciFi board, on LJ, and on the Fox Board as well as multiple mailing lists. Because I wanna talk about my fave show with as many people as humanly possible, because that is the behaviour I learned when I first started participating in fandom. That was what was common, and in fact, is fairly common longtime among fans online. Likewise, I'm used to fans being fannish about a number of things, often simultaneously.
However, on-line, it's become more and more common for someone to discover fandom with one series and one forum, and that's their entire exposure to fandom. They are only fannish about this one series, and it's their first time practising fannish behaviour (such as writing/reading fan fiction, participating on a board or in chats, joining mailing lists, etc.) and they usually hang out in the first/best place they find, and that's their "home." And they can be very protective (and very territorial) of what they see as their fandom--i.e. that ONE place they go to be fannish about the show they love--despite the fact that it is might not (and quite often, is not) be representative of the entire fandom. i know tons of folks who only hang out at the Fox board. That's where they first met fellow fans, that's their "home" and they're feeling very at sea right now because their home has been taken away from them. Ditto this site having a core group of folks for whom this site IS their entire world, and where would we go if anything ever happened to Fireflyfans.net? Same deal exactly.
However, either forum is simply one group of the many that make up all of "Firefly" fandom.
So, socially, it's like we're in the cocktail party stage right now. A meet-and-greet. Sussing each other out, figuring out where the rules and social conventions differ, and what behaviour is considered the "norm" and adjusting accordingly. And it has its moments of awkwardness, and silences, and ruffled feathers. The goal, however, is probably not to have it end in a sword fight. Rather, to eat as many strawberries as we can from the buffet table, and admire the floating chandelier all together.
For the moment, the Fox Board folks seem to have settled in to the main Fox forum, although Adam Baldwin had said in the past that if/when the Fox board closed, he would be coming over here. Adam seems quite addicted to the political threads in the off-topic forum at Fox, so I suppose

*sigh* what to do! where to post.
I'm here until the majority of my peeps from the OB find a new perm home. I do hope that I can post here from time to time. I don't always say the smartest things, but then again it's tough trying to make posting to a Firefly posting board look like work. heh.
anyway, it's nice to be here....hope y'all have room for one more refugee.

I email Haken, and he explained his board would not work like the OB, as ALL the messages show up everytime (a 20000 Last thread would take forever to load!) :)
After thinking about duplicating (exactly) the 'loon and the 'last threads would be kind of silly..
The 'loon was started as the FOX forum did not have a chat feature, (FFF.net has the tag-it AND an actual chat feature!!!)
It might not hurt to change the name of the "Chat" to "Serenity Saloon"?
"The last" thread I started for three reasons.
1.) to bring up the amount of posts of the OB (we wanted to beat john doe and then we wanted to beat fastlane and then we just wanted to show FOX we were 'active' fans..
2.) I was checking the board so much for news every hour the thread gave me something to do

3.) (because of dark angels board) we knew FOX and prospero were gonna give us the boot one day, (so someone would actually end up last, and we could see who it was!)
As I dont know how long Haken would be willing to keep this board going (hopefully for a long time) having a last thread here might be a little weird.
hey! maybe "Tag-it" could be changed to "gonna be last" LOL
Pretty much, I cant understand why anyone would want to go to another fan site?!
Haken has everything we need right here!
Not saying I wouldnt love to have the OB back, but I think its time we browncoats start deciding on a permanent second home (umm, did that make sense LOL)
Just my 2 Cents.

I've been on independent ops for a while, and it seems to me that we have experienced a loss in one theatre of operations. The casualties may never be fully counted, and some will carry scars, but all the survivors are welcome here at our base. We may not be the Bogs and Bayonnets Brigade, but we are Browncoats. No good can come of fighting among ourselves. Fill in our ranks, and be led by Haken, or go and look for familiar faces elsewhere, but don't give up. Keep recruiting new Privates (Succatash, that's a rank, stay with me here, man!) and always believe that "We will rise again!" Amazon.com is one place where we can go and snipe away at the enemy.
Blue Sun T-shirts and brown coats are the uniform of the day.
Now, I need a quiet drink...
