This past weekend, Feb 18 & 19th, 2006 in Boston there was a long running SF con called BOSKONE. This con is primarily slanted toward the written form, but one of the discussion goups was...
WHY SERENITY WAS MORE FUN THAN STAR WARS
With permission, I recorded the discussion. I've posted an Real Audio version here:

It is about 55 min long, but folks with dial-up should still be able to listen since the bandwidth is only voice quality.

My simple answer to the question: Because no one can relate to Star Wars.
Have you ever:
Used your teeth as wire strippers?
Given yourself stitches?
Made improvised munitions with no base supplies?
Pissed in a canteen?
Gone a month without bathing?
If so, you MIGHT just be a !HOOAH MOTHERF*CKER!

It doesn't take me long to figure out why Serenity is better. First and foremost the writing from Joss is superb! You can't beat his witty comments and the characters. Each one is different allowing someone out there to be able to identify with at least one of the characters.
I think Lucas fell off the map with the prequels as far as dialogue goes and he didn't seem to put his heart and soul into the news ones like Joss did with Serenity and Firefly. I must say I did and still do enjoy Star Wars but it isn't as personal to me as Serenity or Firefly is.
