I have a co-worker who used to live in Rhode Island, and she claims that Providence is the most mobbed-up city in the country. Some of the stories she tells...

You know what's really funny about that...

I know Providence (or P-town as it's known by Rutgersians) to be a veritable Gay Mecca.

Hmmm.

So? Either the mob is more tolerant than it used to be, or the gays and the gangsters just ignore each other. Probably the latter.

What's funny about it is the image of a gay mafia. While I'm sure that gay mafiosi must exist, I picture the gay mob dominating the interior decoration and birkenstock rackets...

"Now, I suggest that unless you'd like Vincenzo to put up some striped curtains to go with your polka-dotted wallpaper, that we come to some sort of understanding..."

Ah, the stereotypes run rampant through my little brain...

official moll of the gay mafia

Well, Panny, you'd have to be the official gun moll of the Lesbian mafia!

I'm reminded of reading Thucydides in college. "The Lesbian fleet attacked." "The Lesbians were not cowed by the Athenian demands." Provoked most bizarre imagery.

Back to gay gangsters. Some older crime novels I've read had gay hitmen as stock characters. (I guess that's catering to another stereotype, that gay men tend to be violent.) Then there's Wilmer the "gunsel" in The Maltese Falcon

The innocent moviegoer was allowed to think that Wilmer was Caspar Guttman's leg man and bodyguard. But if you pay attention you can tell that their relationship is supposed to be a little more intimate. (Can't remember if that's from the book.) The funny thing is that in later crime fiction, "gunsel" was taken to mean "thug". But I'm pretty sure it comes from the Yiddish word for "kept boy"!

Hmmm...I think it was brought to the surface more in the movie. I remember the topic being discussed in one of my writers workshop back in college.

Hey!! Everyone knows that Canadians are just a twisted cross-breeding of British and French. From the English they get the Mounties, from the Scottish they get the word Aboot and from the French they got....

I don't know...

Some names of cities and stuff?

Twelve spheres of unendurable brightness spalled the velvety blackness of space.
The silence on Lester Tourville's flag bridge was absolute
And then the spell was broken as Shannon Foraker looked up from her console from where she had just sent a seemingly innocent command to the main computers of State Security's finest Superdreadnoughts.
"Oops." She said.

You know, speaking of that, I'm going to hijack the thread just a bit. I've grown curious as to just where Firefly has filmed episodes in the past. Clearly it's outdoors, seemingly in the barrens of California or the American Southwest (as, last I checked, Canada didn't look quite so high-temperatured *grin* despite having open areas and wilderness aplenty)...

And Joss, good to have you here. It's always nice to know, on both sides of an artistic exchange, that the other side appreciates the efforts one makes. *smile* Best of luck to you and to Firefly!

History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.

Oh, and so you know it's really me, I of course provide the insider TV knowledge that ONLY I COULD HAVE: Some people are Canadian.

Any more doubters?

smootches, -j

And smoochies right back at ya, Joss.

Love, love, love, love this show too.

And I agree - this site is visually wondrous and much easier on the eyes (at least my middle-aged ones) than the official board.

I'm such a dork.... I started giggling and bouncing in my chair when I saw Joss and Tim had posted.

I'm with Rhea... love, love, love, love the show, and you and the whole ME group!

(even if I did start a thread called "Joss is the Devil", I meant it in a good way.... )

As for these *supposed* Canadians, I believe Pandora is right, it is all a conspiracy. They are E-vil. So evil I would say they are the Fru-its of the De-vil. E-vil. (Pandy, quoting So I married an axe murderer always makes me want to bat my eyes and make a pass at ya!)
