Hey, does anyone have any idea as to what the thing is on Jayne's back in the Maidenbar sequence of the BDM? Dying to know... looks like a knitted shield?

When he walks off of Serenity he is wearing a straw looking hat but you only see it briefly, dark, and up-close.

There's a very good picture of this item at propstore.com - they are currently selling his costume from the Maidenhead bar scene, and they have detail pics of all aspects of the costume. (Look at Detail 1)

I still can't tell from the pic what the heck it's supposed to be - a hat? A backpack? Something Kaylee or his mom made him? It's awfully girly. I'd love to know the story on that. Any guesses?
