Hunting accidents are really extremely rare. Statistically, it would be hard to credit. I know Cheney is incredibly paranoid, and that could play into it, but maybe he actually wanted to shoot the guy. I'm not Mr. Cheney's biggest fan, so maybe I'm not objective, but we have hunting accidents here, it's not something that 'just happens.' People involved are usually drunken teenagers, and further investigation often leads to the word 'accident' being called into question. Actual accidents do happen, but they certainly aren't this common that it's randomly going to happen to the leader of the decreasingly free world.

I remember there was a president or a vice president with a boating accident once.

I don't think Bush actually gets away from the TV for long enough to go on a hunting trip. He'd make it as far as the photo-op.

Cheney should take Bin Laden on a hunting trip. Two men enter, one man leaves.

With a crack squad of marksmen waiting nearby no matter what the outcome?

This just supports my theory that the Cheny-Bot is, in actuality, a Cylon.

But seriously, at least they didn't cover this up - I'll give their PR people that. Perhaps it's environmental karma or some such.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move. - Douglas Adams

I wanted to point out, since everyone seems to have skipped this day in grade school, Cheney is not the first sitting VP to shoot someone.
Quote:

...a challenge was issued by Burr and accepted. The principals and seconds met at dawn on July 11, 1804, under the shadow of the Palisades at Weehawken, New Jersey.

Perhaps this duel is the most famous in history. Its results certainly meant the end of both Hamilton and Burr. They carried Hamilton from the field and the next day he died. Burr lived for years, but the shadow of his own doom was ever before him. It is reported that late in life he observed that, had he been wiser, he would have known that there was room enough in the world for both Hamilton and himself. Had Hamilton been equally wise, he would have known that calumnies and lies bring forth but bitter fruit.

When the news of Hamilton's death spread abroad, a thunderous hue and cry went up against Burr. He was a murderer, a criminal, in spite of the fact that all of the rules required under the duelling code had been observed. The Federalists set upon him. He was indicted forthwith for murder, both in New Jersey and New York, and, while he was never brought to trial, he had reason to fear facing a jury, so thoroughly had the public been prejudiced against him.

Presently he returned to Washington and took up his post as Vice President.

In this case the shooting was an accident caused by the time of day and some poor coincidence. The person was injured by a few pellets of buckshot, not a bullet and is expected to fully recover. I say we just write this one up as one of those odd quirks of American History and get back to making fun of the deranged rantings of certain liberals who reside on this board (looking sadly at PirateJenny).
