DIY Serenity models?

I'm not sure where to put this, but Mark Cela has posted instructions on scratchbuilding science fiction ships, weapons and other gadgets from household items like aspirin bottles and toilet items.
The instructions look pretty simple and there are plenty of color pictures. I don't consider myself much of a modeler but I'm very tempted to give this a try.
This caught my eye in light of all the items about Serenity/Firefly props being sold and the general demand for "merch".

Unfortunately there is very little on the ship that can be salvaged from found items.
When real scale models were made they did use found items but now that it is entirely CG they are free to draw up anything.
