Concerning so called 'Space Westerns', does anyone here have a fondness for OUTLAND?

High Noon in space, remember?
I love that flick, it was the first real 'grunge sci-fi', just before Blade Runner.
If only the great Jerry Goldsmith had seen fit to add a western twang to the music, Firefly might have had an easier time of it, eh?

Yeh I love Outland. Sean Connery is cool in that. It is very gritty and also has an 'Alien' quality to it. The spacesuits look like the same props used in Alien and it has the same claustraphobic feel .

It builds up really tense to the 'gunfight at the OK coral' at the end. Very good Sci-Fi. A classic

I actually had been talkin' about it earlier in the day, and then watched it again last night, and a few things popped into my head...
The shuttle from the space station was flashing 'EARLY'.
The man tryin' to kill the hero in the end was a black guy in a spacesuit, who ended up flying into oblivion.

Haven't seen it since I started watching Firefly, these things seemed like more than coincidence, or is it just me....?

Yeah it's a classic.

Nice and dark too. I remember watching it when I was really young. I hadn't a clue why those miners where freaking out! I was expecting some big monster to come outa the shadows!

....oh it was a metaphor.

Pretty impressive what nothing can do to a man Chrisisall

Yeah It must be going on twenty or so years I reckon... there or there abouts.

When did it come out 83,84?

On recall I can see it was about so much more, and I remember reading somewhere it was a High noon remake in space, much like Forbidden Planet was a The Tempest remake in space.

It was maybe the first film I saw Connery where he wasn't James Bond and as a kid the whole thing just was too much for my tiny brain :D that and the drug metaphors left me out in the cold... But as I recall the space walking stuff was pretty well done.

Was it a Peter Hyams film? I like his stuff. Capricorn One.

I though Outland was earlier than '84.

I do see a connection here, I'll go back and watch it one of these days and see if I can find more.

U gonna be smart here Riva?!?

Big 'C'....Dood it's like we were separated at birth or summit.

....Beverly Hills Cop, Amadeus, A nightmare on Elm Street and Romancing the Stone! The A-Team, The Fall Guy, Scarecrow and Mrs King!!!!

84 was a heck of a year!!!

Now you've really piqued my interest with this Objects in Space connection! I have to re-watch outland. I just can't remember it well enough to comment :(
