Coming late to the conversation, but I would love to have a pattern for River's Dress during the Serenity fight scene!! Or to special order from the boutique? Any chance of that still? I have a costume party next weekend...at a Curling Club actually--every year we have a theme at our last competition, and this year is it scifi!
Please help if you can!

Okay. So I'm really late to reply, but this can help people for halloween this year (which is sooo far away). It's gonna be my summer project to make River's dress in *that* scene. I found the image of it on Prop store of london and I'm drawing out a pattern, probably gonna buy one from walmart of a slip or something and find those metal button things. anyways if it helps anyone. It's gray Chiffon on the outside and dark green lining on the inside.

Hi!
Just wanted to add a little more info on the green River dress! The screen used ones are actually off the rack Donna Karan dresses (size 2). Both the inner slip and outer sheer piece are similiar seafoam green. I own the screen used dress from the end scene after River has exterminated all the Reavers (the bloody verison).

Regards!
James

Thank you, James! It helps to just know the brand, especially since I just looked at the DKNY dresses on the online store - and half of them look just like something River would wear! And heck, you don't always need to get something she DID wear - just something that's her style!

Prop Store of London, I bought this glass from the movie Serenity from them. Sits next to my Star Wars Burger King glasses.

Here is some of the River related stuff they still have for sale. These are REAL PROPS from Serenity.

These last two were sold, but they saved it in the archive section http://www.propstore.com/list/cat_id/7/ob/itm/view/0/num_display/100/m

along with other stuff like Mal, Zoe and Jayne's costume. So you can still look at them.

Oh, this is wonderful! I've really wanted to discuss making River's dress with other fans. I hadn't gotten around to creating an account for these boards before, but when I saw this thread I was inspired.

I've been trying to make River's green battle dress on and off since last summer, but it's given me an amazing amount of trouble for something that looks so simple. I would love to bounce ideas and get suggestions from you guys.

I picked out New Look 6244 for the pattern, as seen here:

I started with the bottom version, which is one panel in front and one in back, but upon making it found that it wasn't as full as the illustration implied. The real dress looks to me like it has a bit more body/fullness, so I began considering the side-inset panels used (for example) in the top right version. I drafted together a combination of the bottom version to get its neckline and the top to get the inset panels. It also occured to me to wonder whether perhaps an inset like this might be connected to the gold decorations on the dress - perhaps the loops around the hip and the line going down from there cover up a seam in the dress where a panel was added? If you zoom in on the line of nailheads going down the dress at the bottom where it's just chiffon (esp on the back view), it looks like there is an extra layer of something behind it - either a seam allowance or maybe an extra strip was necessary to attach the nailheads well?

However, I've had great trouble with the inset: I just can't seem to get it to lay smoothly... it bulges out at the corner of the hip and looks bad. And now I'm back to wondering whether it should be there or not. (mostly because I am having such difficulty getting it to work!)

Hell's Kitten and Fei - it sounds like you were both working on patterns for this dress? Could you give us any insight into your approach? What did you find worked, and what didn't work? I for one would love to hear more about your experiences and see pictures if/when you have some.

Also - James, as you are so fortunate as to own a copy of the real thing (and let me just say, wow!)... could you tell us whether the dress is made from one panel in front and one in back, or if there are any additional panels added in? It would be such a big help to know how they made the real dress.

Oh, also, if it would help anyone - I found a site that has gold nailheads that look like they would work for this dress: http://www.i-kandi.com/nhround.asp I'm thinking perhaps a size 4mm or 6mm. You can also sometimes find batches of these on eBay.

Oh, and James - thank you so much for confirming the color of the dress! The two versions shown on the London props site (clean and bloody) look like such different colors, and both look different from how the dress appears in the movie! I'm guessing it's just a question of the lighting. So thanks for letting us know what the real color is!

The pictures of the two dresses on the Propstore website look different because the bloody version is also dirtied up somewhat. It has sweat stains, and the like, in addition to the faux blood. My dress appears to be one panel in the front and one in the back.

Regards!
James
