I love the Serenity dialog

yeah, alot of people pan Blade Runner but I've always loved it and considered it one of the better sci fi films out there. When I was a teenager a long long time ago I read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Phillip K. Dick on which the movie is based. This was one of the few movies based on a book that didn't disappoint me. One thing I've always wondered is what the Tannhauser Gate is?

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Based on context, it makes me think of a "jump-gate" (as seen in Babylon 5), either named for a person ("Tannhauser") or serving a planet or sector named Tannhauser.

It kinda dovetails with the "attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion" --obviously a space battle of some kind (unless "the shoulder of Orion" refers to something other than the constellation).

The phrase "C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate" conjures up images of another space battle, with the C-beams as inter-ship weapons fire, with forces looking to seize the Tannhauser Gate in conflict with defenders.

Obviously, the android is ex-military. The Blade Runner 'verse seems to have had an active interstellar society.

I think Hollywood is shooting itself in the foot. More and more people are getting fed up with the cheep ass plots, and demeaning tag lines. Unfortunatly there are too many people who will see anything because of being bored, so they make money still. Come a day there will be no one who will stand for that, or at least thats my fervent hope. Do I think Firefly was booted because of competitiveness? Hell no, cause if Firefly had been in a competition, it would have won. Only they "forgot" to invite it.

BTW, I went to see "Blade Runner" in the theatre when it was first released. I had no idea what it was about, and was essentially only going because a friend asked me to, and we both liked Harrison Ford (this was the height of the "Star Wars" period).

I was amptly impressed. I had never seen a film like that before. The story, the cinematography, the acting, the sets... The two chicks were hot, too. That didn't hurt.

Liked it the way it was told like a 1940's detective film, too. Nice production as a whole. And how many awards did it win? (Oh, that's another thread. Sorry.)
