I have been playing space based games ever since Origins Wing Commander series. And am a sci-fi fan since childhood ..
One type of game that I never played till September of 2003 was an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) when I got addicted to a game called eve-online

The game while not very similar to Firefly in terms of the rp aspect, or the Universe itself (it has a whole different backstory). What makes Eve awesome is that it is an online game that EVERYONE plays on the same server. All 23,000 people that are online during peak hours play in one Universe.
The game has its own economy/market that is run by the people that play it, mods/items/ships/commodities that are made by the people and used by the people.
My own concern with the game is purely PvP based. But the game allows people to become traders, miners, haulers, researchers, builders/producers... Pirates etc. There are entire alliances that forge there own future/history. Taking over unclaimed space and fighting off others in giant fleet battles. Or in small raiding parties in small but highly manouverable interceptors or heavy assault cruisers.
A video that the developers made for the fans just to showcase some of the graphics and what the game has

Here is a little clip that I made in middle of 2005 with my characters in game pirating/killing npcers/miners/people in low security empire space.

I've been playing Eve for about 4 weeks now... pretty cool game. Graphics are sweet and the "exansiveness" of the game is awesome. Only con i got is the learning curve is huge. Seriously took me 8 hours just to figure out a little of what i'm doing. A great game non the less.
Where do you play? Do you have a firefly corp i could join? What's your ingame name?

I played EVE for about 3 days before giving up. I really wanted to like it since I had just left SWG and needed a new MMORPG to keep me busy, but after 3 days of playing I spent the majority of my time doing absolutly nothing fun. I spent more time reading chat while my ship was on autopilot going from one place to another than I did doing anything useful. Its a great concept for a game, but the implementation and complexity is horrible, especially since progression is limited by time.
Just my two cents about the game. What I really want now is someone to develop a Firefly/Serenity MMORPG similar to the ORIGINAL SWG engine (not this new crap Sony dumped on its customers).

My ingame name is Wizie. And no, I'm not in a Firefly corp :). I happened onto Firefly barely a month ago, when I watched Serenity (movie) for the first time. Eve I've been playing for almost 2 years now.
I have owned 3 chars in game (2 of my own) Hobblin I and Stormfront that I have since sold in anticipation of quitting the game. Wizie was my final char (purchased for ingame currency) to try out some things before I quit the game for good and get on with RL. :(

Yeh cool Game, Eve - Online. I played for about a year and then moved onto World of Warcraft and Guild Wars. SInce finding Firefly I've wanted to go back to Eve but resisted. I've been playing X2: The Threat which is very similar but 1 player.

Yeah, sadly I had to give up Eve after about a year. (In-game tag Gibson Grey) Incredible game, and one of the best MMORPG communities I've come across (which counted ALOT to keeping me playing as long as I did.)
Was spending too much time on the computer though, and had to put an end to it :( Trying to spend more time getting a decent art portfolio together. I'd definately recommend the game, though. Best system I've come across for combining ALL players, and incorporating PvP and PvNPC in one server. Real nice real-time player-driven economy, and beautiful graphics. Still haven't quite brought myself to cancelling the account, just don't have the hours to put in like I used to.
Give me a Firefly MMORPG and I'd be all over it in a heart-beat though :p

Hello all!!
you'll have to forgive me for any blunders - I'm new round these parts - Just thought I'd spike your interest by saying that for the last month or so I've been loosely working (I say loosely because of work/family commitments) on a conceptual space-based MMO that could very, very easily be adapted to the Firefly/Serenity setting. Now not wanting to step on Mr. Whedon's toes, but I would LOVE to see a firefly MMO launched...What I propose is that you all have a good hard think about what you'd all like to see in such a produce, and I'll aim to squeeze enough time in between nappy changes to get a space online for you all to send me you love, support, and money(please?):P I'll weigh all your niffty keen ideas against what I've already got, and spew it all back to you as a game-design doc...if we're all shiny - I'm thinking it may be possible to catch the attention of the people that matter, and we might see our time in the 'Verse yet. Interested?
