Firefly-esque music out there?

Hey all,

Just wondering: Anyone had any luck finding music that smacks of Firefly? In desperate attempts to quell my jones, I pulled down a bunch of Civil War music, but that didn't really cut it.

Anybody heard anything else that foots the bill?

Since the Firefly stuff by Greg Edmondson is a blend of Chinese and Old Western sound, it's hard to find anything that really fits the bill. I did find a track on one of the 12 Girls Band - Eastern Energy - that sounded like it could have come from a Firefly episode. Track 5, or there abouts.

That track and dozens others from 12 girls band are in heavy rotation here at Browncoat Radio. Absolutely one of our most favorite bands.

There's so much really good music out there. I cringe everytime I hear someone say they don't like country music, because almost invariably they're talking about the crap that gets played on the radio. Don't think for minute that the cream rises to the top when it comes to pop music, country or otherwise, you have to dig for it. If you like the sounds of the music on Firefly, look for underground country stuff anywhere you can find it. Neko Case, Whiskeytown, Jeff Black, Uncle Tupelo, Waco Brothers, Handsome Family - a few names to get you started.

If you like the instrumental stuff, I'd recommend a fantastic album by an ad hoc group of legendary studio musicians called "Strength in Numbers". Look for "The Telluride Sessions". The band features Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Edger Meyer and Mark O'Conner. It's really beautiful stuff that brings in a lot world music influence similar to stuff on Firefly. They're all virtuoso musicians to boot. I saw them play live 16+ years ago (with a very young Alison Krauss opening up for them), fantastic show.

Someone in an earlier thread on this topic recommended Nickel Creek as being rather Firefly-esque. They play a blend of bluegrass and other styles.

I picked up their first album and like it very much. I'll probably end up buying the rest of their catalog.

It's not quite the same as Edmondson's score (for instance, there's little or no world-music influence), but shares some similarities.

There's one song on the album that reminds me of Firefly in a different way: emotional impact. "The Hand Song" chokes me up every time, just as certain parts of Firefly/Serenity do.

You have to put yourself in the position of someone who has never seen any Firefly, and listen to me as a Browncoat intent on converting you. OK?

Go and get "Exile on Coldharbour Lane" by Alabama 3 (they go by A3 in the US). Listen, get hooked and get their other stuff. Even listening to Eileen Rose on backing vocals made me go and get all her stuff. And she is good.

What I'm trying to get across here is something that is in the Firefly league. Dark, dead funny when it feels like it, and at the top of their game in all departments. There is a real attention to detail that gives you a CD without a duff track on it that you can, my hand to God, Geese, listen to again and again.

You have real pianos, and what sound to me like vintage synths. You know, Minimoogs and such with that big fat sound that storms out of your speakers and pins you to the opposite wall.

They range between a John Prine cover, of all things, to a just cataclysmic ride with Test Department guesting on hitting things.

The only thing you might have heard by them is "Woke Up This Morning" from The Sopranos. Tip of the iceberg, mate. Tip of the iceberg. You got sweet pretty acid-house country gospel music all night long. Another description (of a gig) I liked was "O Brother, Where Art Thou? meets Trainspotting" and I ain't even sure if she meant the band or the audience...

What I'm trying to get across here is something that you need to hear, and are guaranteed to love, and it's important to me that you do both. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Exactly.
