The thing about the Simpsons (the first ten years only!) is that it had the ability to make one great joke the setup for another even better joke, probably the best thing you can do in comedy. Some shows become big just by doing it once a series; the Simpsons did it in episode after episode.

Examples:

Lisa: Dad, what's a Muppet?
Homer: Well, it's not quite a mop, it's not quite a puppet, but man...
[laughs hysterically]
Homer: So to answer your question, I don't know.

Shopkeeper: Take this object, but beware: it carries a terrible curse.
Homer: Oooh, that's bad.
Shopkeeper: But it comes with a free Frogurt.
Homer: That's good.
Shopkeeper: The Frogurt is also cursed.
Homer: That's bad.
Shopkeeper: But you get your choice of toppings.
Homer: That's good.
Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.
[Homer looks puzzled]
Shopkeeper: That's bad.
Homer: Can I go now?

(One of Fat Tony's goons is on stage, ready to attack Mayor Quimby.)
Homer: That guy with the knife sure can dance, huh?
Quimby: He looks awfully familiar.
Homer: I think I saw him in Rent, or Stomp, or Clomp, or some piece of crap like that.

10. Bart the Daredevil

Homer falls down the gorge. Twice.

9. Bart the Murderer

A great episode, but the best gag is the last. Homer - "Oh, you know who the real crooks are? Those sleazy Hollywood producers!" followed swiftly by the producing credits.

8. I Married Marge

Who could not love a show that is a half hour of parents talking about how they brought up their kids only to be concluded with them joyously high-fiving when they learn Marge isn't pregnant?

7. Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song

Two words - "Teach Me"

6. Homer the Heretic

A strong episode with a great finale, plus an appearance from a five fingered God "The meaning of life is..."

5. And Maggie Makes Three

"Don't forget, you're here forever." "Do it for her."

4. Rosebud

Robo-Burns retrieves Bobo again, 100,000 years later. A great post-script.

3. Bart Gets Famous

After Bart's fame has died for his "I didn't do it" line, Lisa congratulates him:

Lisa: And now you can go back to just being you, instead of a one-dimensional character with a silly catch-phrase.
Homer: [breaks a lamp] D'oh!
Bart: Ay, caramba!
Marge: Mmmmmmm.
Maggie: [sucks her pacifier]
Flanders: Heidely-ho.
Barney: [burps]
Nelson: Ha, ha!
Burns: Ex-cellent!
[Everyone looks at Lisa]
Lisa: [unimpressed] If anyone wants me, I'll be in my room.

2. Lisa on Ice

A wonderfully sweet ending, with Bart and Lisa leaving their rival behind to happily skate together, perfectly undercut by Homer crying in his seat... "They're both losers. Losers!"

... although it's actually Maggie's first word that makes this number one. If your heart doesn't melt when she coos "Daddy", you should never have kids of your own. It's just perfect.

TOP 10 THINGS I DID DURING THAT GASP MOMENT DURING THE BDM:

1) I gasped
2) I cried
3) I wondered if I just saw what I saw
4) I re-played it quick in my head
5) I cried some more
6) I checked to see if my wife was crying so I wouldn't feel like such a girly-man (she wasn't; she was in shock)
7) I checked to see if others in the audience were crying; they were
8) I clumsily tried to wipe tears off my cheek
9) I wondered if this was the real movie, and not a trip to the Twilight Zone
10) I hoped SOME of the others would live

I don't have ten, but there are five extended endings to movies that I absolutely loved and made me walk out of the theatre with a the biggest grin on my face.

AMERICAN BEAUTY- From when Angela says "I feel so stupid" to Lester's final monologue, an already great movie is pushed into the realm of pure art which makes you see the world in a different way. And that last line is so perfect. "You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry. you will someday."

BRAZIL- From that close-up shot of Sam as the hood is taken off of him and it's revealed that he's now in the torture chair to the reveal at the end that the whole escape/nightmare was exactly that, and that by going insane Sam was able to finally break free. Completely bleak, yet ultimately satisfying.

CLERKS- When they're on the floor of the convenience store and when Dante says "I'm not even supposed to be here today" for the unpteenth time, Randal just let's loose at him in a rant that oddly enough becomes the summation of an entire generation. Which is then followed with a very poignant closing up/male bonding moment where Randal wrangles out of the store.

GARDEN STATE- The last twenty minutes or so is some of the most amazingly spiritual things I've ever seen on film. From them yelling into "the infinite abyss" with Simon and Garfunkel's "The Only Living Boy in New York" to the tub scene ("Safe. Whenever I'm with you I feel so safe. Like I'm home.") to Andrew talking to his father to the final shot of Andrew and Sam kissing at the airport terminal. I defy you to be not emotionally moved by that.

THE TRUMAN SHOW- Truman's hit the wall at the end and is hovering in front of the exit door. Christof is giving his little sppech to try to convince Truman to stay. Truman is still silent. Christof finally says "Well say something, goddamn it. You're on television. You're live to the whole world." and you realize that the whole world is indeed watching. Truman then turns around and says


"In case if I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and good night."

He laughs, says "Yep.", takes a bow, turns around, and walks through the door into pitch black. And when the Phillip Glass music kicks in, you can't help but cheer alongside everyone else on screen.

I know these arn't sci-fi endings, but they are ones that really pull at the heartstrings as well as massage the brain.

Oh wow! 'Super Grover' used to crack me up as a kid watching Sesame Street! I loved the way when kids would come and sit next to him they'd give him that look as though he were really alive! I love that about the muppets!

Actually TWG you've reminded me of one of my favourite lines in a film :) D'you remember Dragnet with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks - and there in mid car chase across a beach and as they head into a soft toy stand Dan Aykroyd shouts out:

"Lookout Muppets!!"

I don't know why but that just gets me everytime. I find it so funny. It's making me laugh now... It's not a great film or anything but that line just has me in stitches :D

Nice list of Muppets too. I Love Kermit he's great, he's green. :D I dunno if Rizzo is classed as a muppet but he and Gonzo are a good double act. I love muppet movies. The only lure of becoming famous to my mind is that you may get asked to guest star in a Muppet movie. Then I'd know I'd made it big! I still get a kick outa seeing Mark Hamill guest star on the Muppet Show all those years ago....Michael Caine's best work after Italian Job was the Muppet Scrooged. Very funny :D

Oh well I could go on but I'd be hear all day TWG.

This was the first Simpsons I'd ever watched :D I watched it with my dad who was somewhat sceptical of this phenomenon called "The Simpsons" and he was on the floor with laughter. That gorge scene in particular.

Great endings list, Simonwho! Though personally I would have put Bart Sells His Soul on there. One of the reasons why it's my number one is the ending. I just love it when he's got his soul back and is peacefully sleeping with the cat and dog, and dreaming about the soul world again. Then he and his soul knock Martin and his soul into the lake and sail off into the sunset.

Ha! I totally hijacked this and turned it into a Simpsons thread!
