Serenity Might Fly Again?

Loni Peristere, visual-effects supervisor for the SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that there's hope for future flights of the cast and crew of the movie, which just came out on DVD. Director Joss Whedon—who also created the canceled Fox TV show Firefly, on which the movie is based—expected that the movie might draw the low numbers it did in its theatrical release, Peristere said in an interview. But he added that the movie's sales on DVD, which came out on Dec. 20, are running neck-and-neck with the hit comedy Wedding Crashers, which bodes well for a possible Serenity sequel.

"We kind of expected this from our audience," Peristere said. "We did so well on [Amazon.com] with the Firefly box set and the performance of that helped us get the movie made. We wish the audience would get up and go to the theater, but it shows that they like to keep coming back and revisiting the world Joss created." Serenity made $25 million at the domestic box office after it was released Sept. 30.

Whedon and his crew are waiting to see how well the DVD numbers go before proceeding with a Serenity sequel, Peristere said. "We really hope to return to this work," he said. "We love the characters. It's fun storytelling, and we all love using our talents. ... It all depends on Joss. He's not giving up on the characters. He had incredible writers who had a million stories to tell, and we're all just hanging out and seeing what the world has to give us, and given the opportunity we'll make more."

In the meantime, fans of both show and movie can enjoy the DVD's various extras, which include an Easter egg: a featurette about the making of the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial that appears in the film. "In the main menu, if you play around with the buttons you'll find a featurette of the Fruity Oaty Bar," Peristere revealed. (From the main menu highlight "play," then press left, which will highlight a marker on the right side of the menu; press enter to see the featurette.) "It's all a lot of fun," he said.

This is great, I am so excited for this series! Sounds like the dvd sales are doing real great even though there are no advertisements for serenity and Wedding crashers are still getting adverts...

When it comes out in the UK I'm running, not walking to the store. For the first 350 yards. Then I'll be crawling probably. I'll let you know if anyone carries me.

And then I'll run in again! And buy Seven Samurai, or that wonderful film Sideways, or probably that frankly astonishing 'Edge of Darkness' BBC mythic thriller.

Only one copy for me. Nobody tells NervousPete what to do. Especially when he has a viewing list a mile long.

However, rest assured I will nag others.

This is 100% fan driven too. I highly doubt non-Serenity fans would buy the DVD from the cover art or blurb on the back. Buy more DVDs! Give them to others! Can we get a donation drive to buy DVDs for some needy group of folks? I've bought four DVDs now -- I'm greatly running out of people to give them to! *sigh* Guess it is time for "Plan B": Buy copies of Serenity, find cars with open doors or windows, place a copy in their car. If I don't get shot, think of all the new fans I could make!!?!

I´d love to see her fly again. I think i´ll buy at least four copies: The German DVD, the american 2DVD-Box and the Australian, and maybe the german extended, if there will be stuff like this.
Imagine what you can tell your grandchildren if they ask you "Wow, Grampa, you´be been watching this milestone of SciFi`Serenity´-Movie at least once a week for more than 20 Years now." "Yes my dear, and my last will is to be buried with `em. Can´t stop the Signal darling. Can´t stop the Signal..."

Ahem... okay, that might sound a little obsessed... uhm... never mind ;)

Keep it Flying!

"Burn the land and boil the Sea, you can´t take the Sky from me..."

That's a great idea! What idiot executive cancelled the show in the first place? I have never seen a show where the actors were so comfortable with their characters right off the bat. I love Star Trek, but I have to say, that the first 12 episodes of TNG, DS9, and Voyager should have cancelled those series as well, the acting was so bad and the characters so ackward. Firefly blows them away, but some idiot reality show lover executive decides that WE don't want to see Sci-Fi shows, we need more Survivor. Firefly has left me needing to know these characters more, and I hope we all get that chance. I have a few people I can buy the DVD for, if I can find it!

Hey, don't go being mean to DS9, that was my favorite Star Trek series.

Anyways, when the inevitable special edition comes out, we can spend a bunch more money on it again and hopefully, Universal will make a BDS.

Jayne: Are you saying River's a witch?
Wash: Yes, Jayne, she's a witch. She's had congress with the Beast.
Jayne: She's in Congress?
Wash: How did your brain even learn human speech? I'm just so curious!

Sorry! Wasn't trying to be mean. DS9 is also my favorite. But the characters of all the Star Trek series didn't really become endearing until late in the first season, or early in the second. What I was trying to say, not so gracefully, was that if they hadn't had the words Star Trek in front of them, I don't think they would have made it. The characters of Firefly are so interesting and so well played, I just don't understand how it could be cancelled! I don't think it was even given a chance! I guess I'm still in the denial stage.

I was just messing with you. No harm meant. Though I really do agree with the fact that the characters grew on you on DS9, whereas on Firefly, I immediately had my favorites and loved all of those people. It was cancelled mainly because of poor advertisement, a horrible slot time, and Joss and the execs usually didn't see eye to eye, and example being that they aired The Train Job first instead of Serenity, the pilot.

The reasons the ratings were so bad on Firefly were:

A: They had it take on MLB playoffs

B: THEY PLAYED IT OUT OF ORDER SO IT DIDN"T MAKE SENSE! The first episode THEY showed was "Train job." So halfway through the season, all of a sudden, everybody's just meeting Simon, the Sheppard, and River has been in cryogenic sleep for weeks! It failed because of Fox's inability to be inteligent!

C: NO ADVERTISING! I didn't know Firefly even existed until I found the box set in the store after the show was cancelled. I watched Fox all the time. Now, I refuse!

FOX blames Joss for the failed show, but when you see the above, you realize that FOX is run by idiots

Patron: This woman's a witch!
Malcom: Yeah, but she's our witch. So cut her the hell down!
