While I love Firefly to me the best science fiction show will always be Deep Space Nine.

I loved everything about it. It was a departure from the usual "Trek" stories and really focused on other alien cultures.

Anybody agree?

No argument here. DS9 played fast and loose with the "rules" of Star Trek (as set down by Roddenberry), and was a stronger show because of it. It was the only series where the aliens weren't reduced to wannabe-humans, and allowed to keep and even celebrate their own cultures.

The station was also beautiful, all dark and broody. Much as I love Serenity, DS9 is my home port.

Plus it led to the reinvention of Pocket Books' Star Trek line, making it even more awesome than it already was. And the post-finale DS9 novels gave me my favourite character of any Trek.

Just wish they'd hurry up and resolve the gut-wrenching, character-defining, potentially-lethal cliffhanger from LAST FEBRUARY!!!

I would love to see a DS9 TV movie. While I liked the final episode I felt cheated with what was to come with Sisko.

Maybe I should check out the books

I love DS9..After Firefly it may be my favorite show. What I think it does briliantly is interweave a real-feeling political landscape with a human drama emphasises relationships in a way rarely seen in sci-fi. I love how non-romantic connections between the characters are built, I love all the secondary people (ala Kai, Wayoun, etc) that are given room to develop.
Only nit-pick I would maby have is later season Sisko/emisary stuff. I think maby getting into what it means to be a religious "icon", in terms of how public persona impacts the man, would have been nice. 'Specially as a counter-point to Dukat's character arc. They were going there more at the beg. of the series, which I liked. But anyway, just my opinion, I'm sure others have diferent perspectives. And again, small critizism on an amazing piece of entertainment...

And Alexander Siddig is insanely hot.

You definitely should; unlike the tie-in novels (that can't contradict the TV show), the reboot novels actually progress, and touch on Odo, Sisko, Worf, Martok, the Jem'Hadar, and others.

The ones to look for first are the Avatar two-parter, by S.D. Perry. They set up the rebooted continuity and will point you toward the next in the series.

By the time you get caught to to the Worlds Of DS9 (16 books in), there might be a new one out (glacially slow publishing schedule

).

(yes, I know about "Hollow Men," but it's set during the series and isn't part of the reboot.)

I used to call myself a TNG girl, but after watching DS9 again a few years ago, I realized how freakin awesome it was. The huge multi seasonal story arcs. The varied personalities. Actually allowing characters to make mistakes. TNG never did that.

And the books are cool too. Some are much more trying to read than others. They do tie up the Sisko line and many others. I for one wish the series, or maybe the next one?, would have shown us the Ro/Quark relationship building. In my mind, they make a cute couple.

Out of all the Trek series, DS9 is my absolute favorite. Not that I'm head-over-heels for all of it (why the hell did they need Worf?!), but I definitely enjoyed it most.

Not a big Ezri fan, though. Can't stand Ezri. Love Shar to pieces, enjoy reading him, but I'm all for flushing Ezri and just reading Julian stories without the Dax not-quite-reboot. Ee-yup.

I watched DS9 over a span of 7 months and loved how it stood out from more conventional Trek. Its innovative spirit sure could benefit the nowadays stale Trek franchise. I was sad when it was over but a few weeks later I became a browncoat and rediscovered joy.

If you look at all the other series they all seem similiar. DS9 stood out and went beyond the "discovery of new worlds"
