but I dont like the thing about dancing between River and Jayne. It seems unlikely.
I had posted this on their site.. but I thought I would post it here also....
Something going on between Jayne/River seems to be so far people's first negative reaction to this script... and it might have been mine first.. until I thought about it. I don't know if the author was really implying anything between Jayne and River or even planting the seeds of anything between Jayne/River, but really... the more I thought about it... why not?
Think about it this way.. I don't see anything ever happening between Janye and River anytime soon.. or in the near future. However... what about a few years down the line? When River, let's say.. would be like 23-25 years old? Then the more I think about it.. the more I COULD see at least the possiblity of Jayne and River together. Because think about this: Right now.. River is a tramatized teenager who because of what she has gone through is probably (even right now after the events of the movie) probably even LESS emotionally mature than she would have been by the age of 17 had none of this happened to her. She may be a genious-kick-butt killing machine.. who can read minds.. but that doesn't mean emotionally she is where she should be at 17. Jayne.. obviosly is very immature emotionally. So on an EMOTIONAL level.. they are probably pretty close to each other. Meaning they both have a lot of learning/growing to do. Thus their emotional age is pretty close to one another. Jayne has already shown that he CAN grow and mature. He has potential. Don't get me wrong.. he is always going to be "Jayne".. but as a character he has tremendous potential for emotional growth. Both he and River have the most growth to do.
I always saw Jayne and Mal as sort of weights at the end of a balance. Is Mal going to ever be pushed over the edge and become more like Jayne? Or is Jayne going to grow and mature and become more like Mal? Without Inara.. I believe Mal would become more like Jayne. I believe it will be Inara that will take the pain and bitterness and anger from Mal.. and finally allow him to feel true pleasure again. And as long as that happens.. as long as Inara doesn't leave.. and Jayne doesn't get himself killed.. I believe it will be Jayne that will eventually become more like Mal, growing tremendously emotionally... over time. A long long long time.. :) lol
So if he makes it.. what could be more fitting for Jayne's crowning achievment of becoming a man (emotionally) to know and find true love? He certainly knows what pleasure and sex is... but hasn't a clue of what love is. Now River.. also has a lot of emotional growth to do. So yes.. there may be a 25 year difference between them.. but emotionally.. they are much on the same level.
Now also consider this: A 25 year age difference between, let's say, a a 23 year old River and a 48 year old Jayne would be a pretty major obstical in our world that WE live in. She would just be in college and just starting her life.. and he would pretty much been through all that and would be more interested in other things... not partying every weekend with friends, etc. For the most part anyway. Yet even in our world.. a 25 year age difference happens (and sometimes works), thus isn't out of the question. But now look at THEIR world.. physically.. they are both living the same world.. they both have the same concerns.. they both work to live day to day just to survive and live another day.. to fly again., etc. And as long as River has to stay on the run from the alliance.. this will be her life. And Jayne probably can't see it any other way.. meaning.. he's not exactly going to ever settle down on a core planet with a nice 9-5 day job or anything. So River is not exactly going to want (or even have the oportunity) to go out and party with the girl friends or go bar hopping.. or etc. etc. etc.. that might be the typical life of a young 20 something. They both work to survive, so they have that in common. And they work and live togethe

Thanks for the comments, Smaug. My personal take is that, through season one (especially the latter half), there's a strong dynamic between River and Jayne. Doesn't matter what kind it is. It's just a "connection" of some sort, and, heck, it can be fun to play with that a little.
As a reminder for folks, this project is in full swing, with two episodes available ("The Big Stick" and "Hero Complex"), and a third on the way in a few days.
You can find the epiosdes in the Blue Sun Room, at our living journal site, or at stillflying.net.

Gwek,
Yea.. I understand.. like I said.. not even something that I think SHOULD happen.. just that I COULD see it happening.. and IF it did.. would be several years in the future. Like if the series was never cancelled.. I could see it happening at like the end of 7th season or something like that..
Smaug..

Have just read 1x17. Another interesting episode. Featured Niska, another one of our familars. It was a Jayne centered episode and quite an interesting one. I can't wait for the others. Although during River torture, would have been more interesting if she felt she was reliving what she experienced back at the academy.

Hey, Gwek;
I know I'm chiming in late (longtime reader, first-time joiner, ya know!). I greatly appreciate your efforts to move this whole thing forward and listen to our blathering! Shiny! Here's my 2 cents:
No one has really discussed crew replacements. I know it's a sensitive subject, but they need a new pilot. With all the talk about Chinese being the dominant culture in the 'verse, they really should introduce a Chinese character, probably a man, to take Wash's place. There would be a lot of rich plot ideas stemming from his hiring and becoming part of the crew (trust issues, competency, even romance, not to mention his own backstory.)
In my mind, River was more or less "cured" at the end of Serenity and appeared almost normal. The Alliance is no longer interested in her and Simon. Her psychic powers might be used as an opportunity to delve into the whole Blue Sun thing (2x2, hands of blue, yada yada). Maybe Simon might yearn to return to his old life, who knows (and break Kaylee's heart yet again)?
We saw a much darker side of Mal in the movie; there's got to be more to that than just losing the war. Would love to see some prequel stuff on that; what drove him to become an Independent, etc. And please, maybe some romance for him? He either gets it on with Inara or moves on. That is one tightly wound man.
Again, you rock! Can't offer much to the effort except that I am an internet editor by trade...If you need to make things shorter, I'm your gal!!
"My days of underestimating you are certainly coming to a middle."

We have a lot of writers and idea folk, but can always use more editors. If you're interested in becoming actively involved in that capacity, shoot me an e-mail at gwek@optonline.net.
