Of course maybe everyone else has already figured this out, and I'm just slow.

I was watching serenity on my Tivo, and I turned on the close-captioning. They had some of the chinese phrases on the close captioning, (in chinese that is), but for those trying to puzzle out the lousy pronunciation, at least you can see what they're trying to say.

Thanks. But, yes, most of us were aware of that.

Unfortunately, it's not standard pinyin transliteration/romanization. It's a "roughly phonetic to American ears" spelling.

For example, "fei-oo" is really "fei\wu\ in Mandarin," "ma shong" is "ma\/shang\," "swai" is "shuai\," and "sheh-sheh" is "xie\xie." Longer things are even trickier for people to "suss out," as you can see in the Chinese thread here. Plus, at least one episode captioned as merely "Speaking Chinese."
