DVDTalk also ranked "Serenity" 9th on their "Top 20 DVDs of 2005" list.
The reviewer was unfamiliar with FF, but loved the movie and is now eager to watch the series.
Among other praise, the review says "Serenity" is"a prime example of how, on a tight budget, filmmakers can still make a film with satisfactory effects used to back up a good story instead of the other way around."

Now that's what I like to hear. A person who wasn't at all familiar with the verse diggin on our BDM.
Yippee!!!
More of this and we're on our way to a sequel.

This is great, but somehow I don't like the notion of Serenity called a "mainstream Hollywood movie". It's exactly the opposite in respect of content.

I don't think they're talking about content or quality. They're talking about things like budget, promotion, distribution. In that sense, it is a "mainstream movie".

Hey, I'll take ANY praise for our BDM! Something is definetly more than nothing (okay, duh, we all know that). At least Serenity is getting some kind of good attention. The movie really was awesome. If you think of the miniscule budget that they had to work with, and the product that it produced.... Geez! Could we have asked for more?! Even with a bigger budget, man, think about it. What would YOU change? (That's a rhetorical question, not to be answered.)
All I'm saying is this. YAY! for our BDM and thanks to DVDTalk! We're moving up in this world. Our little BDM and Firefly are moving up in this world. Our 'verse is reaching out!
Wacky fun!

But in respect of studio, it is mainstream. I think the distinction is that Serenity wasn't an indie film, but was rather made by Universal's kindness. Thank G-d for a company that is willing to see the virtue in a project, and not necessarily be *blinded* by dollar signs.
