My co-worker SO stands corrected! There was a 1937 musical called "The Firefly," but I can't imagine that'd be a big roadblock to a current-day space western of the same name.

Movies with similar titles:
The Firefly(1937)
Firefly (1989)
Hotaru (2001)
(called "The Firefly" in the US)

I don't see how any of these, even the 2001 one, would conflict with the Firefly movie being called Firefly.
