When I saw “Serenity,” I loved the movie, but it was tempered by a certain sense of tragedy: rather than watching a 2 hour movie, I should’ve been home watching the second or third episode of the fourth season of “Firefly.”
Since the cancellation of “Firefly” three years ago, many folks have wondered what would’ve happened had the show stayed on the air. What secrets does River hide? How about Shepherd Book? Who are the blue-handed men? Will Simon and Kaylee ever kiss? With “Serenity” (the movie and the comic book), Joss Whedon was able to give us some of those answers, but not necessarily in the format he’d originally intended.
The movie raised new questions, and chief among them was this: What would this story have been like if Joss Whedon had been able to tell his tale in 22 episodes rather than 2 hours?
A group of Browncoats have decided to answer that question with a virtual conclusion of Season One of “Firefly” (beginning on December 27th, 2005) and a full Season Two, which will retell the movie the way Mister Whedon might've told it over 22 episodes (beginning in Spring of 2006).
Our story will take you to most of the same places the movie does, but the path along the way will be a little different, and a lot longer.
We’ll see some old friends and more than a few old enemies. We can’t promise that we’ll entertain you as much as Mister Whedon would have, but you should know that this project has been put together by those who care about the show, and we’re taking this bird up out of love.
Beginning on Tuesday, December 27th, one week after the release of the “Serenity” DVD and three years and one week after the airing of the final episode of “Firefly”, our crew will fly once again. We will post the last 7 episodes of Season One as episode-length scripts on fireflyfans.net.
If you would like them mailed directly to you as pdfs, please e-mail me at gwek@optonline.net.
In early 2006, these episodes will be housed on a Web site and collected into a “virtual DVD set”, including special features.
So, come December 27th, take yourself back to a time when we hadn’t yet visited Haven and The Operative hadn’t heard of River Tam, a time when the story ended with “Objects in Space,” and you were dying to know what the next episode would bring.
We can’t show you how Joss Whedon would’ve done it, but we can tell you…
“Here’s how it might’ve been…”

Take my love
Take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care
I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me
Take me out to the black
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me
There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me

GWEK:
Sounds pretty cool. Just remember that Firefly is copyrighted material. I hope you've gotten permission to do this, beforehand, and aren't planning on making money off of it. That's fer sure gonna be a non-flyer.
Unless, of course, you've got better lawyers than F*x, Universal and Joss have got... Technically speaking, even fanfic is susceptible to legal action. Most artists just see it as harmless (i.e., not-for-profit) and even beneficial to building their own fanbase.
A large production like yours might attract some "Imperial entanglements", though. Hell, even some Firefly online t-shirt vendors have run afoul of (alleged) copyright infringement. Ask the guy who was a seller on zazzle.com until his store got shut down...
Advisedly,
zoid

Hey Zoid. Joss, unlike others, has given his official blessing to those who write fanfic based on his characters. Back after BtVS went off the air, someone asked him what the fans should do to cope with not having more seasons of the series, and his reply was (roughly paraphrased): write fanfiction'. I don't see any reason why he would feel any differently about Firefly, but, to be safe, we'll be including a disclaimer on our website (which will be constructed sometime after the first of the year) that lets everyone know that we're not making any profit off of this project whatsoever (just to cover our butts in case Universal doesn't see things the same way Joss does).

There's no way a person or company can stop fanfic projects (unless you're making money of course, but who'd ever try to charge for fanfic?).
The only person who's ever managed to get fanfic removed from a website was JK Rowling and you know how she did it? She asked nicely.

Ann McCaffrey also does not allow fanfic relating directly to her characters and specific stories.
